Considering the complexities of trying to form clamshells, I would think that having some sandcast in malleble iron would be the way to go.
Not 100% authentic but the cost of making dies to stamp repos and the need for a 2000t press would be somewhat "prohibitive". I'm sure one could scratch build them from a few pieces welded together but hey, lots of elbow grease for sure.... Just a thought.
