Default Wheel base / engine location....

Seems to be a lot of modification done to this carrier.....

Looks like the engine as been moved forward off center and next to the driver...... and the front hull extended....... now sitting nose heavy without the 2 pounder mounted in the rear....

Do we have an archival picture of the completed two pounder in service....?

How was the drive shaft routed on the floor???? sideways...

If the transmission shifting rods for the typical UC were complicated this arrangement must have been a nightmare...???

Must a been a great vehicle for engaging the enemy during a tactical retreat!!

Just curious.

Bob.
The 2 pounders all had the engine mounted beside the driver..from the factory..
It was a different arrangement to allow a two pounder to be mounted where the engine normally goes in the carrier..
Got any pix of CC7..??

Default Know I understand....

Hi Alex

Just finished looking at the magic Collins did to create an Australian pattern mortar carrier..... it explains the funny engine position.

CC 7 pics will go up this evening...... had to submit them to censor first.

I wonder why they wouldn't have used a similar wheel arrangement as a T16 to balance out the carrier for this purpose?

Default 2 pounder arrangment

the drive line comes straight out of the transmission to to diff by a tail shaft in my carrier

but the original vehicles had a transfer case to the diff so the tail shaft would be straight.

my vehicle runs a diagonal shaft as it does not have a Tcase.

The shifting rods for the transmission were much simplified compared to the UC, but the location of the shift lever in a cramped driver's compartment was a nightmare for anyone +/- the ideal height and build! I can understand why Colin's Replica Mortar Carrier has a 302 and Auto combo.

Angry cramped conditions

i am 6ft and can only operate the clutch it in the lowest seat position viewing from the viewing ports only in 2 pounder cars

or i just put a screw driver in the seat ajuster halfway but is a little bit dodgy when going cross counrty

but i no somebody who has put a 351 gt falcon engine with a 4 spd auto in thier lp2 which has been modded for off roading / trail blazing and cut dowwn to the hull and bathtubed

They're of the original mock-up of the Tracked Truck, 1 ton (which didn't ultimately follow this design), but it does show the arrangement of the 2pdr and 3" Mortar Carrier drivelines.

Default Tony

I note that Brenton has not 1, not 2, but 3 of these wheels on his carrier.
Each wheel (pictured)is stamped with it's own (carrier?) number 1.U1614, 2.U1431.
I see in the parts list, that there are nearly 30 different suspension related parts that are prefixed with the "U" is this any clue as to the origin of these wheels.
Do you have one of Jeff Plowmans books? ,according to which N.Z in Aug 42 was committed to building 2500 carriers. many parts were on hand and many orders for parts were being filled (from Aust, U.S.etc), and could not be cancelled. For example,in Feb 43, there were about 1.1 million surplus track links here (A350,000., U.S.750,000)
New zealands requirement was for 520 carriers, a further 650 had been built, ordered by Britian, and then no longer required. The 2500 was over and above.
So Tony, which way bogie wheels went accross the Tasman, I have no idea.

Well spotted, Lynn.

Brenton, if you're wondering what Lynn's post is about, we discussed 5 spoke wheels Here, and then moved on to Here. The presence of 3 of these wheels proves nothing either way, but it does show that they appear in the strangest places.
