A further response from another:

Is there any way to weigh it?

With the 3.7 mountain How. shell weighing 20lbs filled and fused and the 3.7AA going 28lbs in the same condition the weight (even subtracting several pounds) should cinch the identification.

Taking a guess from the shape of the nose and the width of the driving band recess I would vote for the 3.7in AA shell.

Hi Guys ,Thanks for the replies. Lynn being a youngish fellow I measured it in Metric but yes it most probably is 3.7 inch. thanks Geoff for the effort, I weighed it today and it came in at just under 22 lbs. so I quess we can take it as being a AA shell. Thanks heaps for the quick identification
David...
