Can't comment to the positioning, but I have noticed in several instances that prewar and postwar markings of this type tended to be more easily seen than on vehicles during the war.

Your point is well taken, though, in that I have seen very few photos of the ID signeage on the tilt or body as this photo shows.

Now I have to go back and see if I can replicate Keith's excercise regarding saving the photo.
