Greetings Rob

I really really appreciate the help here. Yes there is a patch on the area where you indicate a gpmg mount would have been although without removing it it is hard to say if this is indeed the case.

Do you have any gpmg mounts or access to any, if so let me know as I WILL TAKE ONE!!!

My reason for asking the many questions re the CFRs, VINs etc is that I will get a replica data plate set and will require the proper numbers and way they were formatted to get stamped on the plates. Does anyone have a set with a picture so I can seee what they look like?

Currently this unit show 34,000miles give or take. Rob, are those tires milspec issue or a civvy aftermarket set? I am arguing with a guy who say they are but I say they aren't..

If you look inside the tub, you should be able to see the holes. There were 5 or 6 if I recall, and they were a fair size.

There are still some GPMG arms at the local scrap yard, but it is getting near the end. There might be one full set left. At a minimum the arms are still there, and I recall one base missing it's pin portion. It will have to wait until spring though....Winter in S. Ontario is not the same as winter in Manitoba. Your worst day is one of our better days.

There are a lot of the wirecutter bars out there, but postage will cost more than the bars.

I have a spare data plate set out in the shed, but I can't remember if it is Cdn2 or Cdn 3. I'll let you know next time I get to the shed.

The tires are definitely civvy aftermarket. The odd jeep had the civvy tires but they were a local purchase item, and local purchase was not something freely done back then. The standard issue non-directional tires were nicknamed "suicide tires", because if the road was icy, they had no traction whatsoever, and doing unscheduled 360 spins was not uncommon.

Of the 30 or 40 Cdn2 and Cdn3 jeeps in this district, I only recall the one at Kenora as having the civilian tires.

Willy's Acres (north of Barrie) sells nice reproduction CDN2 and CDN3 data plate sets, which can be found on this page:

http://www.willysacres.com/m38a1military.html

Only issues are:
1) He wants $120 per set, which is kind of steep; and
2) I have never had any luck actually getting hold of anyone at Willy's Acres. I have called repeatedly, left messages and sent e-mails, and I have never received any response whatsoever.

Good luck.

PS - for anyone with access to a parts CDN2 or CDN3, I am looking for a front bumper. My current one is seriously aftermarket, and I am trying to replace or remove all the post-service add-ons (except the Warn Overdrive).

Mike

Chris: Brian Asbury has CDN3 data plate sets for $110.00 (including rivets and screws). Contact him to bring a set to Acton. I got mine from him and am quite satisfied.

Default tires

Hello

The civilian tires were the same as those used on the 5/4 ton at the time, but smaller.

B.F.Goodrich Silvertown (something) traction 6.50x 16 lt 6 ply tubeless.

Similar ones were/are available from Firestone, Cooper, and Goodyear.

I found that they were better traction than the NDT's and our unit had them on our M151A2.

These may also be available in 7.50 x 16 sizes but i do not know how this would affect handling and control. Don't think that they are available in 7.00x 16.

I remember the ignition toggle switch going missing on the pool vehicles and i use to carry a spare one just in case i was assigned a vehicle missing one.

As I said earlier, there were some jeeps outfitted with the civilian tires. I even saw a set over at 2VP.
I am pretty sure that once a CO's driver would do a 360 with the CO in the Jeep, the CQ/Maint would be ordered to supply the commercial tires rather than the non-directionals. They were 100 times better on the slippery roads.

One only has to look at the tread pattern left on the ground after a jeep rolls by. It is usually only a snake looking mark from the center of the tire.

I could especially understand those tires on a M151A2. They were very easy to lose control of. My personal Mutt had them for the decade or so that I owned it.

Default GPMG Mount Hole Pattern

Here is a picture of the R/Side with the GPMG Mount holes for the bracket. This jeep came from the Windsor Regt. Next task is to find a mount and a GPMG.

Default Some Differences Between the CDN 2 and 3

Here are some of the differences between the CDN 2 and 3 that Rob and the others have mentioned. It may me feel like I am back in TQ3 AFV Rec classes with these tiny but important differences.

Nice set of photos. We should start a thread showing just the differences between the two models.

Your photos show the original turn signal relay box on the Cdn2. There were very few of those left around this neck of the woods, having all been changed over to the solid state units.

Does anyone have access to or info regarding the proper camo scheme and colours as well as tac marks for mid 70's to early 80's Canadian MVs?

Specifically interested to know about mine as research has indicated a history with 1 Hussars, which is/was armd recce....

I did see a pic from their website which showed a M38A1 in service with gpmg mount, antenna mount and wire cutter. The only marking I could ascertain was the coloured CDN flag sticker on the rear bumperette.

Was wondering if stencil cut black spray painted CDN flags were used or appropriate???

Please tell me about the dash mounted blue extinguisher and details of the antenna mount and appropriate items.

Here is a shot of my Cdn 3 data plate. Note the contract number is stamped on, compared to a Cdn2 which had it as part of the data plate. Note also that my contract number differs from Dave's Cdn3 below. According to the service pub pam on the Cdn Jeeps, there were 2 different contracts for the Cdn3, so you will have to rationalize your serial number to figure out which contract your jeep was purchased on.

Default Data Plates

Chris,

Here are 2 data plates. A CDN 2 and 3 to dishtinguish the difference. Like Rob indicated one is stamped and the other is pre painted on. Hope this puts you in the right direction for a new set of plates.
