Sand channel, PSP, Marsden matting

Hi Guys

Last night I stirred up the old the old grey matter and finally remembered where I had seen the photo of a section of Marsden Matting on an LRDG Jeep as part of their kit. It was not a LRDG photo, but in a movie called "Play Dirty". starring Michael Caine as a stiff upper lip British Army Captain sent on an LRDG mission behind German lines.

I thought it a good movie showing lots of LRDG trucks and Jeeps scenes. That now clears up where I had seen the Marsden Matting on a Jeep, So I am wrong to assume that officially it was part of the LRDG Jeep Kit. I think "Lang" put it correctly when he said one could be accused of "Gilding the Lily" when setting up their own restoration kit.

Hi,
I lost interest in that movie when I saw the Dodge M-37's they had rigged up to look like Mercedes military trucks. I guess they had to use something....
Being in this hobby has ruined many a war movie for me, if you know what I mean....

I know exactly what you mean. I too since becoming involved with WW2 Jeep restorations am constantly driving the family nuts when I point out wrong era vehicles used in movies. I did not look to close at the mock up mercedes.

Hi Little Jo - having a jeep in SAS config, I've spent a lot of time studying the same question. There are photos of good SAS/LRDG 'restorations' - with the sand channels fitted squarely across the two spare wheels on the back - screwed on with big sort of wing-nuts. I don't know whether this is ridgey-didge (the channels fitted there that is), but it looks neat.

But to digress: Warren, I see you have a C60X. Do you have any info about it, and what body style it had? Do you know the chassis number of your C60X, please?

Yes Mike - I have all the chassis no info and other details however they're with the vehicle at our place in the country - I'm heading there this weekend so I'll report back next week You probably know the vehicle - it belonged to Fred Reeves who rescued it from a scrap dealer and put it back on the road for the Back to the Track exercise in 1995. I owned a Studebaker US6 at the time - I'd never seen a C60X before - no idea such a thing existed - and I said to Fred if he ever wanted to part with it, could I have first dibs? Almost two years ago, Fred decided he'd change down to a C8AX and gave me a call. I absolutely love it. For its size it's easy to drive and the GM motor runs so smoothly.
I haven't explored the truck's service history yet (btw congratulations on your C60X research on the Old CMP site. Fantastic! I once tried to contact you at the AWM however and they told me you were now living in the States) - Fred was confident the truck was once an RAAF refueller - later used for artesian water boring out at William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track, fitted with a huge auger before Fred found it. It's fitted with a Studebaker gs body which looks the part - and is practical to sleep in the back of and carry things like the jeep etc - even if the configuration is technically a work of fiction. If I had the tanker body though - and all the bits and pieces, I could be tempted to put it back on.... however I've got enough projects.

Thanks for your comments on the C60X article: I had forgotton it was up on Keefy's OldCMP site: it was also published in the MVPA's Army Motors some time ago.

Yes: retired, moved to the USA and loving it. I could only shake my head in dismay recently when I read about the new replica firearms laws being enacted in Victoria: no such difficulties with such things here!
