kratje is a much-used trading currency here in Holland as well. Today, a 
kratje of Mr. Heineken's finest will set you back about €10 (roughly CDN$1.30/litre - cheaper than petrol!), but you can get generic beer for about half that price.
I'm sure I will be overwhelmed by your country's remote and unspoiled territory (being one of 16 million living on 16,000 square miles), so I'll make sure to bring a few
