This first pic looks like the Commer Beetle, possibly a prototype as body is not the standard 15 cwt.

Actually, you may be right. I did not look to closely at the pic as I got it from Bart lo these many years ago.

Certainly, the bonnet is quite different.

I suppose we should be happy to see the photo in any case as I doubt it has ever been published. But again, thanks for the heads up. None of us are perfect, sad to say.

I guess the Brits were not keen on creature comfort..... or was it a time related thing....ever see the early open C cab of the Mack trucks....it partly explains the confined cab space of my cab 11 designed by someone who never drove the beast......

That first image does look very much like a Commer Beetle.
But regarding comfort levels, the "Ant" with full windscreens is actually a very comfortable truck to drive, with it's softer suspension (than a Bedford MW) and "bucket" seats with backs that are curved so they wrap around and help keep your back warm. The driver sits alongside the engine and is comfortably warmed by it, also the drivers position is so far inboard that when presenting a right turn hand signal (remember those?) only the drivers hand can be seen past the GS body.
The passenger sits at an unsocial angle, with his back to the driver (not that you can converse over 25mph anyway) and if he does not hold onto the handle attached to the dashboard during a sharp right turn he will find himself being flung out - not pleasant.
If they were all comfortable and easy to drive then half the fun would be gone.

I found in a booklet entitled "British Military Transport" authored by David E. Jane in 1978 published by Almark Publishing Co. Ltd. ISBN 0 85524 308 2 the same pic I posted which describes t he vehicle as an Ant towing a carrier pigeon trailer.

I salute you for your powers of observation. Maybe 2% of us would have noticed that and I am not in that 2%.

I served some years in the R Sw Signals (1963-64 1st Regt Uppsala, 1964-65 3rd Bn Boden, 1966-67 2nd Regt Karlsborg).

The carrier-pigeons were since long time gone, but trailers (horse traction) were still found on the Regt:s scrapyard. I also found one in a park in Haparanda - converted to a playing house for children. So I remember those small ventilators close to the roof.

Today it is very warm in Sweden! A cold beer is urgently needed.

There is an image of a Commer "Beetle" on P.16, so the first image on this thread is in fact a "Beetle" not an "Ant".
The booklet shows a few Guy vehicles including including different versions of the "Ant", from the 1937 prototype to the last version with full windscreen of 1943. There is one image of an "Ant" towing a "Pidgeon" trailer, a "Quad-Ant" G.S. is shown but no FAT version, an FBAX and a "Lizard". There are also some very nice line drawings. Though the drawing of the "Ant" mistakenly labels the Autovac as the aircleaner.
Other marques are covered as well, definately worth the money if you can find a copy.

I very much like those 4X2 Ants , there was , a few years back , a restored one for sale in N.Z. A few antipodean British WW2 vintage vehicles are now being returned to the U.K., the big profit margin is tempting some owners to sell . 5000 U.K. is worth about 14000 local dollars . I know of a restored Standard tilly that has gone from OZ to U.K. and a unrestored Morris 10 tilly as well .

The only Guy products we have here are the 4X4 Quad tractors with meadows engine . They usually have had the rear body chop treatment .

I met the owner Jim and was generously offered a drive after the prize giving where he received an award.

It is much different to my C8AX, with a mirrored gearshift pattern, mechanical brakes, 'armstrong' steering and smaller cab, but it is neat to drive, and a real blokes vehicle!

As mentioned on another site this Ant has been rescued by me, and now lives near Carterton, NZ. Registration is EA 6939. Pictures on HVMF forum, under username packman!
