My gage has been cracked for probably 40 years . The question now is How much radiation is left and is the whole gage contaminated .Can it be redone up with a new dial and glass without hurting someone .If this can't bedone then is it even safe to remove it without some protective gear .

the gauege will be thoroughly contaminated mate, the three small segments and needle tip are the bits that were luminised, you might be able to find somewhere to fit a dial face for you the problem is the dust being spread about... where is the gauge now ? if its in a box along with oher stuff i guarantee you everything in the box with the gauge will also be contaminated too..
in my humble opinion in your case i would at very least wear rubber gloves paper suit and respirator to handle the gauge with a broken glass face (not dismantle it) but the rubber only stops you getting particles on your hands and nothing more the dial face could be done by someone i am sure but they would need a propper purpose built cabinet to put the dial into which was sealed and behind glass etc etc the dial face itself comes out with two screws the needle slides off..... thats easy.....just not easy to do without getting a dose or contaminating your workshop etc etc.

The gage is still in the instrument panel on the carrier .I could duct tape the front to contain the dust and then remove it for disposal .I don't know how many guys have looked at this gage over the years . I have a box of gages for a halftrack ,wonder if they are the same problem too .

George. wear a mask and gloves at the very least... possibly a good idea with the tape... do you have any spare glass fronts to replace the broken one out of curiosity?

If you had a Mk I* speedo (see attached picture) I think they are completely safe. My guess is that they relied entirely on the panel light
I dont think there is any "luminous" stuff in there. Maybe the radium paint in the MkII* is the result of comlpaints about not being able to see the MkI* speedo at night. With your MkII*, maybe it would be better to buy a nos one, and dispose of the old one. What ever you do, be careful.

I have a new speedometer for the MK2 but when Richard said he could make a MK1 out of the MK2 I thought great idea but then this problem showed up .Is there away of decontaminating the radium Water eg.? I have seen alot of carriers with broken gages and not once thought about radiation I would need the different dial and the glass for a MK1 tochange it
