Hi Martin,
I believe SCWE stands for 'Special Cold Weather Equipped'. That is what we need here in Canada this winter. All the best, Brian |

Hello Martin,
Your Chevrolet have once been fitted with "Special Cold Weather Equipment - SCWE". As far as I know the Canadians had two standards of special equipment for cold weather operations, "winterized" for use in temperatures down to -29 degr. F (-20 C) and "arcticised" for use in temperatures down to -40 degr. F (-40 C). To my knowledge the SCWE is supposed to be cold weather equipment according to the "winterized" standard. I own 3 Chevrolet C15 delivered under contract SM 6050 which was once equipped with the "SCWE". I have enclosed a scanned image to show the publication plates according to one of the vehicles and the special equipment. The "C-SCWE-01" is the parts list for the "SCWE" and the "MB-C2-W" is the Maintenance Manual. I have a original copy of the parts list but have never seen the MB-C2-W. According to the late Peter Ford's excellent CMP-INFOEX the "MB-C2-W" is a supplement to the "MB-C2" Maintenance Manual. But as far as I can read the publication plate for the vehicle the "MB-C2-W" must be a "MB-C2" with the supplement printed as a part of the manual. In the "Drivers Handbook C15-HB1-W" the supplement about the "SCWE" is printed in the book. Hopefully someone can help to solve the question about the "MB-C2-W".

The "C-SCWE-01" looks like this. No illustrations, and only 8 + II pages.

Hello Phil,
Thanks for the information about the "MB-C2-W". It was interesting to get confirmed that it is a loose supplement. It is the only publication I don't have for my C15's and I have been looking for it for years. I intend to restore one with all the "Special Cold Weather Equipment" in place. So it would be interesting to find a copy.

Thanks for all your information on this manual, my C30 Wireless is fitted with cold weather equipment and used to have a heater for the wireless body.
I would like to find the correct manual and parts list one day, it would also be good to see what the heater for the body looked like and how it mounted so i can understand all the holes in my wheel carrier. I do have the Ford Manual with the cold weather supplement so if any one wants to swap for a chev one i would be very happy. Also have a C60L-HB1-W Drivers handbook to swap for a C30-HB1-W I know its a long shot but i might as well ask. Once again thanks for all your help!

I think this will answer your question about the location of the oil filter in the later Pattern 13 Chevys. Standing the filter unit up right made servicing easier and allowed for a drain tap to drain water condensation out.

I've fixed the problem with Hi Resolution images of the last three pages. http://www.canadianmilitarypattern.c...0Equipment.htm This Supplement Covers the following:
It helps to explain some of the running changes on Pattern 13 Chevys such as change of oil filter location and size. Those three little pipe plugs on some intake manifolds. Now does anybody have the supplement for the Arctic modifications, it includes the addition of a separate small gas tank, a cab tarp which covered cab from the window level down and a gasoline space heater that was put on the ground under engine, the tarp of course was to trapped the heat in. There were some other modifications but I can't remember what they were. Also does anybody have the Ford Cold and Arctic Weather supplements. If you are wondering about the condition of my copy, it apparently lived in the tool box of my HUP from 1945-1979 along with a full set of manuals for the HUP. Cheers Phil

Here's a scan from Military Vehicle Profiles. They were used on Ford and Chev CMPs. I've never seen one in my travels if that's any indication of how rare they are.

Hi guys.
Found this old thread and thought I'd post some pictures of the arctic kit on my CMP. I has primer pump, diluter, personell heaters. A nice detail is the production month/year markings on the electrical motors. Here are som pics of the insides of personell heaters. I will post more pictures later. Hi Svenn
Do you have the little one way valves for the primer pump? I may have just seen a source for them the other day. Cheers Phil

Hi Bob
You are correct the filter horizontal on the frame has got to be one of the nastiest locations you could figure out just about as bad as many modern cars. You get to burn yourself on the exhaust pipe and dumb hot oil down your sleeve. But the change over to the bigger filter mounted high in the engine compartment I think had as much to do with better filtering and a filter that condensation could actually be drained out of. There is quite a lot of information about the filter relocation in the Service Bulletins from the fact that they had a kit for retrofitting the earlier design kind of tells you that original horizontal locations was not doing the job. Cheers Phil

Hi Phil
Funny you should ask about the one way valve. All tubing with a few exceptions on my kit has been removed, so please tell me, as I am in the process gathering the bits and parts for the kit. I also have had no luck finding the small fittings that goes into the manifold for the primer kit. I have a NOS primer kit that will be mounted on my GPW jeep so i at least have an idea how they look. Svenn |

Here are some more arctic kit pictures, this time the passenger side heater.
I have had the core replaced. The construction of if makes it almost impossible to be sure that all coolant / waters has been drained. Mine had a few minor leaks, but a new core has been bulit in. The fan is driven by a two way fan...so that it can either be used as a window defroster or heat the passengers and drivers frozen feets. I the large outlet leed air throug the engine compartment in ducting an into drivers side. The smaller heater mounted on the drivers side is only for window defrosting. Svenn |

Hi Svenn
You raise an interesting point about not be able to drain the heater core unit. In reading through the cold weather equipment manual I don't find any reference to this problem or the need to always run antifreeze in heater equipped vehicles. There are numerous cautions about damaging the heater cores and about checking them for leaks. Has anybody come across a manual or service bulletin referring to this issue? Great to see actual photos of a heater unit, thanks for posting. Special Cold Weather Equipment Manual Link http://canadianmilitarypattern.com/S...0Equipment.htm there was a page missing from this manual in my posting which Svenn spotted and I have now fixed. Cheers Phil

MB-C2W was also published as a complete manual where the supplement was bound together with a regular MB-C2.
The supplement is at the rear of the manual and the pages are exactly the same as the stand-alone supplement Phil has shared on his website. Colin |
