Default Construction HUP

If the painted sign on the side of the truck says "Dominion Construction", then I can say that I do recognize it. It now resides in Hammond.

I thought it looked familiar on your avitar and Mike C. mentioned to me a few years ago it had found a good home.

Peter Ford had traced the history of it for me one summer when he was rummaging in the Archives in Ottawa and had also tracked down the other two from the same contract.

Sadly, those two photos are old Polaroids circa 1978 or so and the resolution sucks on them. I might, however, have some 35mm photos tucked away in which the HUP is a background piece for other vehicles. I will check and see if there is anything useful on them for you and let you know.

Peter had been doing his usual searches at PAC for anything useful on CMP production in particular and wartime Canadian production in general, when he stumbled across some documents related to the British Government's authorization to Canada at the end of the war to dispose of contracts it no longer needed, or could afford to pay for and the contract covering that HUP came up in the documents. Peter recognized it because he had visited and seen the HUP on his way down to Ottawa.

It was unclear if the order had been completed for the vehicles or not, but Canada apparently agreed to dispose of the vehicles that were being held at GM. I assume GM would have rec'd some or all of the money earned by sale. From what Peter could figure out, the vehicles were batched out to several depots across Canada. Dominion Construction purchased the one I ended up with from MacDonald. Two others went from MacDonald to the Weyburn area in Saskatchewan. The kids of one farmer who bought one, took it for a joyride one night shortly after he bought it. They stalled it on a railway crossing and it got whacked by a freight when the kids went back to get help to push it. The other one, Peter eventually found in another farm and was able to buy a door and the cab partition assembly from him, as I was in need of replacements for both items.

A chap in South Winnipeg eventually bought the HUP from Dominion. He ran a machine shop and I could see the truck for several years from our apartment complex. Eventually went to see it and found it was for sale. When I first saw it up close, it still had the spare mounted, though it seemed a bit smaller than the wheels it was running on, and the headlamps were alive and well. It ran well and the brakes were soft but did work. When I went back to actually buy it about a week later, the owner had it locked in his shop because somebody had stolen the spare and the headlamp assemblies. About three weeks after that, somebody nicked the canvas top assembly off my M38Cdn while it was parked at our apt.

That's about all I know on the HUP. Will let you know what I find in the way of other photos.

David, I kept the Dominion Construction panel as momento - most of the side panels had to be replaced due to damage/ rust issues and to allow me to get at the backside of the support ribs.

Once again, MLU proves itself to be a valuable source of CMP information!

Nice touch keeping that panel. Even though the HUP never saw any military service, Dominion was a very long and important part of it's history. Have you been able to find a mate for the rear interior lamp? That item was on my wish list forever, along with a replacement Lub Chart??? that was mounted on the driver's door. The one on the truck was original but had been worn smooth over part of it from many years of 'driver's elbow'.

David, I found the second lamp, but I continue to seek both charts - the lube and the electrical. I have the original worn out lube chart, a spare divider upper frame (which will eventually make its way out west) and a spare rear door.

I will post some before and after photos when I get back home next week.
