With the price of round bar in Aus it still works out cheaper buying them in .

I asked the experts. Hot rivets are just black bar .Some suggested they were forged as this would make the grain correct .

An old railway guy said you can make a snap by using a large grade 8 bolt, , heat up the bolt head to a bright cherry red and hit a steel ball into the head to get the dimple
