Are you aware of Russell Holden in NSW? He is a lot closer to you & deals in parts & tires - tyres by the time they get there.
He often organises a container out of California to Au. & offers to move parts, etc. for other collectors - (mostly early Cadillac) I have had several pleasant dealings with him. He probably has a good way of shipping from Au. to NZ.

I imported six 9.00 - 16 STA ND bar tread tyres from Wallace Wade in Texas about 3 years ago when the exchange rate was good. I thought the AUS$700 cost to airfreight them to Melbourne wasn't too bad but what I hadn't counted on were the charges at this end. All told it took another AUS$500 and two 120km round trips to the airport before I got possession and it could easily have been worse if I hadn't been retired Qantas staff. Some kind assistance from customs people also helped but when it was all over each tyre had cost a little over AUS$400.

A few months later I got another six tyres from Summit Racing but had them sent to a friend of a friend who was loading an Australian bound shipping container in LA. That shipment worked out at around AUS$300 each by the time I got them home.

It may be worth your while to talk to Nigel Ward of Military Vehicle Spares in Brisbane as he stocks Indian made tyres in the size you want. Speedway is the brand I've seen and they seem to be ok. Getting them to NZ may be an issue though.

Just curious, what were the extra $500 charges for. Just regular import fees or something specific to the tyres?

Andrew, What ever you do, do your homework. Unless the tyres have the right info on them, you will not be allowed to use them on the road. Do your due diligence.

Kiwi shipping out of the states is the way to go to NZ, they make up containers of all sorts especially for us "down under". I also have a container I want to get under way soon from Brisbane, if you need stuff brought over to NZ, Cheers.

Hi Bruce, the extra charges were made up of GST (Goods & Services Tax) which was not only applied to the cost of purchasing the tyres but also the airfreight cost. A charge of $150 was made for a quarantine inspection which also required returning to the airport the next day as it couldn't be done at short notice and had to be scheduled in. Qantas charged a $90 handling fee and could have charged demurrage but didn't.
There were other lesser costs that I can't recall now but i remember the total.
