I see that the coat has an inspector's mark "I S' over a stylized broadarrow with his personal number (?) below. This same format is in 1952 and 1953 M38CDN and M38A1CDN serial number data plates. Does anyone have further information on these numbers: Inspector E19 inspected my M38CDN and I'd love to know who he was.

Is the "IS" not for inspector services?

Wayne: I have always seen those coats listed as a Jeep coat. However, I have seen many of them with Naval markings indicating use in that branch.

Whatever the branch use was, they are a extremely warm (albeit also extremely heavy) coat. Not sure if it's the insulation that keeps you warm or the effort of moving in it.

You are right Rob... its a heavy coat!

Brian: My '53 M38A1 was inspected by what looks to be E18 (S/N F-200024).

Wayne: I think f you look closely the inspector number is E19. This would concur with other E19 stamps observed on serial plates close to your number. You can see in my example how the tail of the is very close to closing the lower circle.
Also do you see a flatter shape to the 4 serial plate rivets compared to the rest of the plate? If so then I think that this is a clue that the serial plate was a fixed at a different time, perhaps after the jeep had been inspected, approved and given its delivery date? Just a theory.... Brian

Brian, I think you're right. The inspector number is likely 19. There is some paint on mine that is making the line unclear. Your theory on that plate being added after delivery is likely correct. One of my rivets is definitely flatter than all the others, but they don't look quite as flattened as the ones in the image you posted above.
