Hello Bruce
The battery top Niels shows is complete, the lower box was eliminated and the battery was held by an elasticized strap. Probably to conserve material and reduce the weight.

Interesting case on the 58-Set itself. Mine is a 10 August 1943 product ( Wireless Set No. 58 (Canadian) Mark I) with a completely smooth, sharp edged case. No pressed ribs. On/Off switch mounted on the top end, not down by the aerial mounts, and it only has two lid clasps on the long, front face, not two pairs set to either end. Nice to see such an interesting variation here.

Batteries for this set haven't been made for decades. They were also notorious for short shelf life. Best bet is to make your own. Voltages needed are +1.5V, +150V, +90V & -21V. The EMER F702 shows pinouts of the octal socket.

I can't recall where I found this but here is a photo of the original battery.

Two other alternatives are the PSUs made in Italy. They seem to work quite well.

The battery wasn't mine but I can give you the dimensions of the inside of the battle battery box. The battery should be quite close.

Inside dimensions are 10" length, 2.75" width & 8.75" depth. There is a felt lining inside as well to make the battery snug. It is 1/4" thick on the ends & 1/8" thick on the sides.
