Qor Pin ???

Hi Oh Wise Ones,

We're trying to identify a QUEEN'S OWN RIFLES small pin that I found in a 2nd hand store and gave to Geoff as a little birthday present, if anyone can help. Here's the description:

Small Metal Maple Leaf

White enamelled oval in center saying "Q.O.R. of CANADA"

In the center of the oval it says "83"

Beneath the oval it says "OVERSEAS BATTALION"

On back it looks like "ELLIS BROS LTD"

83rd (Queen's Own Rifles of Canada) Infantry Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force

- Authorized: under G.O. 103a - dated 15 August 1915
- Recruiting Area: Toronto
- in Canada: 4 Aug 15 to 1 May 16
- in England: 6 May 16 to 7 Jul 16 - was absorbed into the Canadian 12th Reserve Battalion in the UK - saw no service in France/Flanders as a battalion

The pin you have was probably produced by the Battalion from 'Regimental Funds' or through their 'Old Comrades Association'.

By the way MA its 'Queen's Own Rifles' not 'Queen's Old Rifles' ...me thinks you need a good couple of hours on the SQUARE of good old 'MONKEY DRILL', that should smarten you up.......MASTER SUNRAY, make it happen

Marko... having trouble this eve trying to teach her 180 beats/min and doing the marchpast at the double with rifle at the trail...

Okay ... so, I don't know if I found "a find" or not ... (you tell me?) and if so, how much would you expect a reasonable price to be? It's in pretty good condition

....with her being so itty bitty, it might be wise to remove the magazine so she'll have 'ground clearance', she's probably catching the bottom of the mag on the SQUARE and thats whats slowing her up...... a Pixie 'at the trail'....now thats funny......, carry on MASTER SUNRAY......

Hi Mark, the cap badge you posted is same thing only different from the pin I got The pin, as mentioned , the "83" rests on a white background and the oval (trim) is green or blue.

BTW ... I paid $28 (she'd wanted $35) How'd I do? is that standard?

Morning all, the item that Karmen describes is a souvenir pin for the 83rd Battalion, Queen's Own Rifles. These are commonly known as sweetheart pins, as they were bought by soldiers to give to girlfriends or mothers, etc. Quite collectable in their own right and very attractive.
Karmen your price is about the going value on these. Again scarcity is the key, and the 83rd is not rare.

Thanks Bill, I could not remember the name of the 'pins' off hand, I remember referring a women to you a year or so ago regarding one of these types of pins and was going to suggest to Karmen that she PM you but you beat me to it.

Thank's a lot for all this information. I love the idea behind their use! When I saw the Q.O.R. and OVERSEAS BATTALION I thought of Geoff and that maybe it would be of personal interest to him because of that ... so I bought it and slipped it in with his birthday card

(I'm glad I didn't "over pay" ... thanks for that info too)

Hi... here's another "mystery" to solve for Geoff, if anyone can. It's another small pin:

Looks to be Sterling silver.

5 small silver Maple Leafs placed in a V formation on silver wire. The wire is stamped but I can't read the stamp at all.

This item appears to be a WW2 era patriotic pin. V for Victory, the shape made by the maple leaves. Obviously a Canadian item. Patriotic and sweetheart pins are an interesting collectables area. They are still easy to find and there is an almost endless variety of them. In addition, one could specialize in an area, eg CEF or Imperial sweethearts (though Canadian sweethearts are getting tougher to find), or V pins or "My dearest" pins etc.

Hi Bill ... thank you again This is an really interesting area. I've been surfing off and on today, Googlin' away ... searching things like "Canadian Sweetheart Pins" ... it sound like I should also search V PINS or IMPERIAL SWEETHEARTS PINS etc ... I never knew pins were made "specially" for the wives/sweethearts of soldiers. That's such a "nice touch" and I've never heard of that til recently.

Puts added meaning to the whole idea of "being pinned" by a sweetheart. How romantic and more meaningful when the pin comes from a love going off to war, meaning to return to his love ... "a promise" ...

"My Dearest" ... how lovely. Aw.

Well ... will surf for sites about these "tender" collectables then ...
