The snail looking thing is actually the horns of a Ram. The rams head was on Western command vehicles, although not in that form. It was (and may still be in some form) the symbol of 1 Brigade (the Western Army) right into the Y2K.
The one you show is different than the normal Western command shield. It is likely a formation sign, but is not shown in the 1947 manual of markings. It does mention that formation signs should be a circle of 8" diameter. I believe we have seen this sign before here on MLU, but I don't recall where. |
