The elusive F15A FRONT Grease seal

Hi all,
Well I am good, but not that good...................... and I cant for the life of me work out what seal I need for the grease seal for my F15A's front axle.

In the book it says part number 1190B SEAL FRONT AXLE HUB GREASE OIL LEATHER but surely there must be a neoprene replacement. Mine is non existent so Lots of help is required. REMEMBER its an F15A and the parts change with different models and makes.
I have the 'free' greased brake shoes so I am thinking that replacing this grease seal should solve the issue.

Hi Ian

Having had to replace the hub seals on my HUP years before the internet and hence before MLU. I'm pretty sure that once you clean up the hub you may actually find that it has numbers on it which a good industrial bearing house will be able to provide a cross over to a new modern seal. Also measure the ID x OD x Depth of the existing seal.

With the measurements we should be able to confirm a modern number. It will be interesting to see if is actually different from the seals on a C15A .

Don't be surprised if the new seal is half the thickness of the original.

Yes,
I read it through twice but numbering the seals isnt helpful to location.
I know that you are referring to seals but these are leather, not neoprene.

Also its too confusing as you and others have not identified which seal is where?

Hence this new thread.

Try AA Bearing & Oil Seal
Service in Melbourne, they specialize in vintage oil seals for older vintage cars but you need to measure the diameters ie the outside diameter and width. Chicago Rawhide have a huge range of modern seals , just look at their web site.

To make sure, remove the old seal and check the following measurements:
OD: 6.25"/ 159,8 mm
ID: 4.5"/ 120 mm
If your old seal measures up to this, contact your nearest auto parts center and order SKF 45150. If they don't stock SKF they will be able to cross reference it to another brand.

PS: SKF took over Chicago Rawhide many years ago, but are now rebranding them again as CR Seals - meanwhile the part numbers stayed the same, so CR 45150 = SKF 45150.

Ahh Yes, what I suspected but wasn't sure. Thankyou.

My Auto shop charges in gold bars so its a short 50 minute drive to Wollongong. Thankfully it is one of the largest coal mining cities in Australia and there are several good bearing and seal suppliers.

Lugging a 200KG Differential up in my pickup isnt impossible, but it is inconvenient.

I am not the person to measure things with a vernier, and i have never trusted myself (even been trained formally in using a vernier & micrometer)

I don't like the idea of buy twice 'cause you got it wrong the first time.
I have a collection of VW parts like that.

OK SO:

That stupid Spreadsheet in MLU IS incorrect as the seals in the description are reversed:

Seal SKF 49998 is ID=5.0 OD=6.25 Width is 0.5 - This is the correct part number for the F15A Brake Drum Grease seal.

The Seal SKF 45150 is for INSIDE the Diff. ID=4.5 OD=6.25 WIDTH=0.5

SO BEFORE YOU SPEND $52AUD ON THE WRONG SEALS which is the SKF45150, -this is the INNER SEAL IN THE DIFF.

Use the SKF 49998 which is the correct seal.

Sorry to read you have been misinformed. Indeed the cross reference from C01Q-1190-B is not SKF/CR 45150 but SKF/CR 49998. Turns out I was wrongly informed and have been sold the wrong seal as as well...

Caveat emptor in bold red below: always check the dimensions, also listed in the spreadsheet. But if it would be of any help, I would be willing to pay for the incorrect seal if you cannot return it.

I added the dimensions and made my own spreadsheet to avoid further confusion. They're NOT on the original spreadsheet which is seriously incorrect. Hence a lot of confusion for people over the years.

The alternative Part Number for the Grease seal (F15A) is National Seals P/N 416865.

ID 5.00" OD 6.250" W 0.5" Double lipped seal.

If I go back through the releated threads I see the correct info was there, but I did not help by muddling it up. The sheet clearly shows C01Q-1190B to be a 5" seal and part number 49998.

I am inviting you to share your updated spreadheet, on the thread "Modern part numbers for CMPs", to add to the body of knowledge on MLU. Indeed the original spreadsheet was not without faults, but this is work in progress, each MLU member going back and forth finding out the correct modern replacements.
