Sometimes, the exterior dimensions are seemingly unusually odd dimensions, to allow exterior sides to be big enough to permit a particular interior dimension, taking into account material thicknesses, layers and fold radii.

I very strongly agree with Tony. There will be nice round simple dimensions but once box sections etc are part of the design the dimensions that you assume to be the key ones are often far from round numbers. I have also been surprised at how variable dimensions can be of fabricated items. When I did the drawings for replica Ram front fenders / tool boxes I measured each component part of about a dozen real ones and found differences of more than 1/2 inch which is far more than normal manufacturing tolerances for that kind of fabrication. I can only assume that very basic drawings had been given to a variety of sub-contractors who interpreted them independently.
