There's stories about war workers, many of them women, who painted radium dials in factories (licking the brushes to 'point' them) only to suffer mouth cancer later in life. I also recall a building in Toronto that did radium war work of some nature that was found to be still excessively radio active well into the 1980's because of the radium paint drips that found their way onto the wooden floors.
