Track jack handle

Derk,

I am not currently near any of my reference material, but will do my best to point you in the right direction.

The Ford basic part number for all jack handles (even current production) is 17081. The prefix and suffix denote the actual application.

For the Carriers, there are 3 "Jack" handles that were part of the original tool kit: One for the Walker Hydraulic Jack, one for the Track jack; and one (the one circled in red on your image) which is used with the Rear wheel bearing socket and engine oil drain plug socket (images in Tony's link).

(The following is based on memory and may need correction) The handle that you already have for the Walker Hydraulic Jack is C01UC 17081 (might have a suffix), The one with various bends I believe is a C01Q 17081, and the one used with the track jack is a 78-17081.

I have all three handles, and can provide images, but not until this evening.

A couple of years ago there was a thread which included some discussion between B Harris and Rob Love which included images of 78-17081.

I think the notch on the handle shown might be to lower a hydraulic jack as opposed to being for adjustment of the carrier brakes. That said, it would be awkward working with a notch in the handle like that. But if it is hard to work the hydraulic jack release valve, imagine how hard it would be to get quarter turns behind the backing plates in the tight area behind the axle armour protection plate.



As Colin mentions, the 17801 will be the group number from Ford for jack handles as opposed to a part number specifically. There will be letters and or numbers (or a combination, depending on when the prefix was initially created) denoting what vehicle the item was originally designed for, along with a suffix denoting changes in the item.

Knowing Derk, he will not be happy with the commercial handle though, as it is too easy to get. He will want the military handle. I am attaching a photo of the track jack in use to compress the springs. Note which handle is in use. Yes, it is the 78-17801.

I knew somebody would have a photo of the jack handle in question. Thank you Tony, and everyone else who responded. Now that I know it does exist, let the hunt begin!
Rob, you know me too well, with my OCD, I cannot just accept a close example of a civilian jack handle, it has to be the proper one! The fun is trying to find these items anyway.
That is basically the last tool I am looking for to complete my carrier tool list (I think) besides variants of the tools in question!

If my memory is correct, the handle with bends (C01Q 17081?) does not fit in the handle socket of the track jack, as it is too large. For carrier purposes, this handle is intended to be used with the rear wheel bearing nut socket (BB 17033?) and engine oil drain plug socket (C01Q 17033?). For CMP use, (C01Q 17033?) is also used for the front wheel bearing nuts on 4x4 vehicles.

I believe that the hydraulic jack handle will fit the track jack, but the bendy handle will not.

If you have a copy of FUC-02 or FUC-03 handy, I believe 78 17081 is listed as it is the "correct" handle for the track jack which was modified from the period commercial Ford bumper jacks (78-17080 and others).

I'll confirm this evening.

Derk: I do not believe that 78-17081 is a close civilian handle. I believe it is one of the three handles listed in the parts manual, and was also used on civilian applications. If you do not have a 78-17081, you do not have the complete complement of handles that belong to the carrier.



That said, I have no doubt there will be some C01T 17081 out in our favorite surplus yard. The challenge, of course, will be to spot them in the acres of scrap.

I am now co-located with the appropriate reference material.

The correct part numbers are:

C01UC 17081 A for the Walker hydraulic jack handle (B should be for use with the optional Auto Specialties jack but I have never seen any images of this type of jack)

78 17081 is correct for the track jack handle

C01T (not Q as I stated above) 17081 is the bent handle that started this thread which is used with BB 17033 B and C01Q 17033.
