Rod Bellars collection

I just heard that Rod Bellars in Ozz has died today 15/7/21 at age only 60. I'm not sure when he last visited this site but I know he was well known by many.

His continual working on heavy armoured vehicles and artillery pieces in shorts and flip flops, could not be conducive to healthy living.

Sorry to hear that. Thanks for letting us know, I have changed his account to reflect this sad fact.

BTW, he hadn't been active on this Forum since September 2016.

It was stage 4 GBM brain cancer. Was stage 3 when they found out about it and did one surgery to slow the growth down but prognosis was terminal from the start.

His wife Amy who lives in Singapore has Lloyds out of Melbourne taking the collection so it will probably be awhile before you start seeing aspects of it up for sale since its five large sheds to sort and catalog. Not to mention them having to figure out what everything is.

Rod and I had been trading partners since we brought in the first container from him back in January 2000 and we received literally tons of his collection purchases in Texas to forward back every other year. You'd be amazed at the stuff we'd accumulate to export back to him.

He'll be sadly missed and was a wealth of information to those that really knew him.

With Rod's passing, I asked Amy what her plans are. Well, looks like LLoyds Auctions have the job and already a lot of the bigger items have been moved to their premises. No idea yet as to when the auction will take place, but it will be interesting.

I will be interested to see what happens when the scrap metal auction and the Staghound auction finish and the photos are identical. The entire auction collection seems to have been temporarily pulled once already.

It’s always a shame to see a fellow enthusiast’s lifetime collection broken up and sold off, but so much sadder that the auctioneers didn’t seem to even bother having many of the lots correctly identified.

Whoever is currently bidding on the scrap metal lot is in for a hell of a shock when they find out they are only getting the steel on the pallet and not the Staghound in the pics 😳

It all seems to happen like this to the best of collections eventually.
Just remember , Us overseas bidders need to apply to the DOD for a permit to export out of Australia , which is fairly straight forward , as they do not seem too concerned about saving their heritage these days. Cheers.

Amazing collection, and certainly a yardstick of Rod's enthusiasm.

I do note that so many of the lots are poorly described, with very small photos or the items still partially wrapped.


There are a few smaller items I will be bidding on, but does anybody know if Lloyds will ship out of Australia? If not, is there anyone on this site who will act as middleman on purchases for me and receive then forward the items? Unfortunately we may be bidding on some of the same things. As they say, no friends at an auction.

Hanno: Go to all auctions, then look towards the bottom and there are 10 packages of auctions related to this estate. Some are over 500 items, some are less.

Some, possibly many, of the items listed will need to obtain a Movable Cultural Heritage export permit before export from Australia.

That's right, 2 separate Permit applications, to 2 different Government departments.

An MCH Permit under Clause 4.4(h) issued by the Minister for the Arts, and an ATAR permit from the DECO office, Dept of Defence.

But I am also surprised that the Auctioneers have not made any mention of the need for Permits and/or Licences for Australian buyers. Some high bidders might be in for a rude shock come collection time.

Thanks Mike. Other than a vague description “World War 2 artillery cannon, stamped GR Ordnance Factory Australia, 17PR I (Aust)” and a generic text about the Pheasant, there is not much to go by. I suspect it is a mock-up made from a 25-pdr mount and 17-pdr gun.

A lot of the descriptions leave a lot to be desired.

How about the Bren Gun 100 round drum magazine listed as a "landmine". It is obvious by the bidding on that item that the bidders have figured it out.
