Ford Gearbox Top?

How do the casting codes on top of this cover compare to the other covers you have on hand?

I am not sure of Ford produced their own gearbox housings or outsourced that work, but perhaps the markings will tell you if all the top covers were made in the same foundry.

I’ve gone through numerous Ford military and civilian parts lists including FMA-01 (the late-war pictorial major assemblies identification book) and I can’t find anything that resembles your part.

None of the books that I have access to show part number BBF 7222. If my understanding of Ford part numbers is correct, then BBF should refer to a right hand drive model BB truck. CMPs used BB 7222, and BBC 7222 but the Ford system was to keep the part number from the first vehicle on which the part was used.

This link claims to have a vehicle with the part number BBF 7222. While there isn’t an image of the number to confirm, the chassis does appear to be a Right hand drive model BB. https://forums.aaca.org/topic/278764...b-model-truck/


At this point my best guess is that your parts were modified, with the question being who modified them and why? Possibly a local program using available parts to provide spare shifter assemblies that could work on a Lynx in the event that the proper assemblies were exhausted?

Did they come into your possession with other Lynx parts?

Hi Colin, these tops just came with some other random parts , in NZ. They would have to have been cut down I think, but I have two and they are exactly the same, so must have been done fairly professional like, not just random. There was just a thin sheetmetal cap over the top, this did look a little home made?, but then how would these be used?, cheers Andrew

I wonder if it wouldn't be for a rear engine bus. Ford starting offering those in 1939. The basic casting might be the same as the 32 ford B truck, but with the tower milled off and capped.

I agree with Rob. It certainly looks like the casting is the same as the standard BB truck one but with the tower cut off and machined to accept a cap. Longer selector rods would be a simple change.

Maybe that is the answer, Bus remote shifter ,I have pulled apart as there is no wear on selectors , look new, so good for my gearboxes I am building at the moment for the lynx's, cheers Andrew.
