CMP C60 chassis number?

Hello Tony, here is my take on it:

The listed chassis number is not a regular one as used during WW2. It may well be your Chevrolet was assigned a number sometime after WW2, as Chevrolet usually did not stamp the chassis number in the chassis frame rails - only on the data plate, which has a habit of going missing.

If you are missing data to stamp on the data plate, you may want to use the technique informally referred to as "counting heads." It is based on the ongoing study of period documents and photographs, as well as surviving vehicles. See the thread Looking for Date of Mfg and Chassis S/N information for C15 where we basically did the same exercise for a C15 4x2 truck.

You already found the particular useful source, David Haywards webpage with CANADIAN CHEVROLET GMC/PONTIAC SERIAL NUMBERS AND ENGINE NUMBERS found at https://hotrod.gregwapling.com/chev-...dian-chev.html. It lists a number of chassis numbers for "C.60L".

The basic configuration of the Chevrolet CMP vehicle chassis number is a follows:

• Digit 1: Model year
• Digit 2-5: Model number
• Digit 6-10: five digit serial number

The CMP model number was built up as follows:

• First digit: CMP series "8"
• Second digit: number of wheels
• Third digit: number of driven wheels
• Fourth digit: chassis type (applied sequentially and arguably chronologically as each chassis type was signed-off)

The photo of your truck shows a C60L with 158" wheelbase, correct? The C60S has a 134"wheelbase (see CMP Specifications). The C60S is Model 8442, C60L is Model 8443.
Assuming the date of Mfg is correct, your truck is a C60L built in 1943, so the chassis number should read 3844312345 (where 12345 stands for a 5 digit consecutive serial number).
