Barry,

I do not think carriers were actually made at Chilwell, the pictures may well be of the rebuild lines at the Royal Army Ordnance Corps' Central Ordnance Depot. When REME was formed in 1942 and took responsabilty on maintenance, repairs, etc, the workshops at the Depot were named No.8 Central Workshops REME

I have a book on Chilwell, obviously not the same one though, because these pictures are not in it.

Default chilwell

Richard,

your right. after reading the book which terns out to be a very good read. it is based about the construction of chilwell to tern it into a main storage depot. The photos are regarding how the british motor industry terned from manufactuing cars and lorrys for private inderviduals, to military uses to help the war effort.

Hi Richard,

My Loyd Carrier is made by Ford Motor Co. England, see the note
from (our) Bart Vanderveen. On the other picture is Bart and his wife Margo waiting for a trip with the Loyd's first drive in the Dutch Military Camp "Princess Margriet Kazerne" at Wezep, 1997.
After the nice drive an other amazing happening there, I met totaly unexpected my friend from Canada, Barry Churcher, really
what a surprise !!!

Mvg. Dirk

Default chilwell book

hi Bryan, thanks for that, i thought the pictures were familiar but couldn't remember where I had seen them. I have a book called 'Task Tremendous' that details Chilwells war record, but I couldn't find your pictures in it.... now I know why. It has some fabulous adverts in it like for the carrier production lines at Wolseley...

I am alwys keen to hear of other 'war production' books for motor and related manufacturers.

kind regards

nick

Nick, do you know 'Calling All Arms' by Ernest Fairfax? Well worth finding a copy if you're into books on wartime production. There's a copy offered for sale on MilWeb as we speak:

Nick I have a couple of war production books which may be of some interest if you haven't come across them before.
1. Ford at War by Hilary St. George Saunders (1946, with lovely hand drawn illustrations and paintings)
2.An Account of Our Stewardship by WJ Seymour (Wartime story of Vauxhall Motors Ltd, Luton.)
3. British War Production 1939-1945 a record compiled by The Times (1945, covers everything including commonwealth input)

Let me know if you need copies of anything in particular.

Nigel

Default books

Hi fellas, thanks for that. I can add a a couple of title to this list. The English Electric Comany producd a company diary, in A4 format, hard backed, listing all the companies activities, lots of nice pics including the tank Factory in Stafford.

Dunlop war record, paper pamphlet

Also, thanks to David I have a Chevrolet canada book, again nice pics, but have not seen a Ford version of the same book, or dodge for that matter..

I have previously seen, (but could not afford at the time!) Daimler history with lots of Dingo photos, an account of the Leyland factory in Leyland, Lancashire, Churchill tanks etc, and of course the AEC war Record that Ihave seen online somewhere..

any others?

kind regards

nick
