Tony, your explanation makes sense. I've also heard that officer's were given a clothing allowance and often had alterations done professionally by tailors. Michael Dorosh mentions in his book "CANUCK...Battle Dress, Weapons, and Equipment" that officers had serge facing added to the lapels on their BD blouses to facilitate the wearing of a shirt and tie.
I picked up the Korean War set of BD at an estate auction in Vancouver years ago. They belonged to a Major of the RCASC and the pants had only the map pocket, most likely due to the personal tastes of the officer.
