I have been asked by 37 CBG HQ to supply my Universal Carrier as the "Caisson" vehicle to transport the remains of Lieutenant General RW Moncel.
Moncel, Robert William, Lieutenant-General 1917-2007 1942 Commanding Officer 18th Manitoba Dragoons 1943 General Staff Officer 1 II Canadian Corps 1944 - 1945 Commanding Officer 4th Canadian Armored Brigade 1946 Director of Canadian Armored Corps 1957 - 1960 Commanding Officer 3rd Canadian Brigade 1960 - 1963 Quartermaster-General 1963 - 1965 General Officer Commander in Chief Eastern Command 1965 - 1966Vice Chief of Defence Staff 1966 Retired Bde Comd intends to sp the funeral ceremony of LGen Moncel with an honour guard. This gd will be based primarily on 8CH iaw the family's wishes. The scheme of manoeuvre sees the funeral party moving to Hfx asap, as one formed body, and performing the ceremonial duties on 17 Dec. A Second World War universal carrier, under escort, will transport the remains of LGen Moncel from the CFB Halifax drill shed to the Base Chapel where a simple ceremony will take place. At the Chapel, a 50-person honour guard will provide an escort, two soldiers in VIII CH ceremonial uniform positioned at the Chapel doors, and a piper and a bugler (provided by 36 CBG) will be available for appropriate music. It has been requested that the guard be comprised of Armour Corps soldiers only. VIII CH will provide the funeral parade commander and a 50-person guard, augmented by PEIR soldiers and, if nec, CTC Armour School pers (DIRLN auth 8CH / PEIR/ CTC Armour Sch) So, in respect to the funeral being comprised of "Armour Corps" only, I think it may be correct to cover up the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Formation/Tac signs with a more apropriate "Armour Corps" signs.... Any Suggestions of a unit to portray given his WWII service record ? What would a vehicle of the Commanding Officer 4th Canadian Armored Brigade have on it for tac/formation signs? |

The formation sign would be that of 4th Armoured Division, i.e. a yellow maple leaf on a green background. The AoS of the HQ of 4th Armoured Brigade would be a red rectangle with the number 50 in white.

John,
In your opinion, do you think that this would be the correct thing to do? |

At risk of sticking my nose in where it doesn't belong, I believe it's an outstanding idea, Brad.

Chances are that absolutely nobody will realise the significance of the tac number or formation sign - that is what makes the act of respect all that much more powerful. Do it and take pride in it.

First off,
Thanks to everyone for their input on this subject. I had these magnetic signs made up today for the carrier. As the carrier is tucked away at home, I put them up on the Bofors to see how they looked. They will pass muster for Mondays service. The AoS of the HQ of 4th Armoured Brigade ![]() |
