Default CMP Spare Tire Carrier and Tool Box

As indicated in the to Glue or not to Glue thread I have started on that most elusive creature for CMP enthusiasts. The legendary Spare Tire Carrier and Tool Box.

First off I wish to thank George Mackenzie for his comprehensive plans, they truely are a must if you are going to persue this endeavour.

I have deviated slightly from his process but I am sure the end result will be the same.

I sourced out the initial big stuff to a sheetmetal shop to bend and shape. From there on it will be head-skratchin', thumb bangen and picture taking.

Here is the start....

Cheers

Mike: You can take pics, confirm measurements on my C-15A, at the same time that you visit to take measurements of the tarp!

Default CMP Tool Box end of Day 1

Well, I got some angles cut and some small "chunks" ready. I am now concentrating on all the little stuff and musing over the "clam shells". I have several ideas but haven't made up my mind yet. They will no doubt be the last pieces made.

Oh ya, appologies to George McKenzie....I note your an Mc not a Mac

Pic of progress....

cheers

Default clam shell clamps

Hello Tim

Looks like a nice project, George did a nice job of the drawings, what are your thoughts on the clam shell clamps ? Georges tool box has the welded on clamps and I guess the entire tool box is welded, the model I have is bolted assembly and I have been thinking of contacting a foundary to stamp the clam shell clamps, I have one for a pattern, but would be interested in three more for myself, if you have any interest let me know. Default Clamshells

Hi Gordon,

As mentioned, I have been musing over the clamshells. I don't know if you are aware, I am one of those who purchased 10.50 X 16 tires for my F15A. Now I know they are not the correct size for my 15 Cwt but damn they look good on "her". That being said I am planning to "modify" the clamshells to accomodate the width of the tires as I bought a set of 5. I believe they will be wider than the correct ones for the 9.00 series tires. I am considering making a concrete mold, turning up the ol' CW music, find my ear defenders and excersize my cork-pulling arm.

Considering the complexities of trying to form clamshells, I would think that having some sandcast in malleble iron would be the way to go.
Not 100% authentic but the cost of making dies to stamp repos and the need for a 2000t press would be somewhat "prohibitive".
I'm sure one could scratch build them from a few pieces welded together but hey, lots of elbow grease for sure....
Just a thought.

Hello Mike: I hear you need some clams. Albert and I used 10 gauge in the arbor press with a hollow bottom die ( pipe). Top die has a convex radius-form to shape (2 templates X & Y co-ordinates) cut to fit & weld. It is necessary to take the bend out a bit on the end of the channel to gain a little more depth-see pic. Roll the edges cold over a 2 or 3 inch round slug of steel welded to something solid. Let me know if u need the templates. We built 2 of these bolted knockdown carriers. Will send pictures when I figure out how to do it again.

Default snuck into garage for an hour....

I said I was going to be busy the next few days but could not resist doing a little more to the box. I am well on the way to finishing it and have to resist being a little impatient. Top is now welded on. There will be a little cosmetic grinding here and there before I hit the whole thing with paint. I am quite pleased how it is coming together...hope my attempt at the clam shells is as successful. One pic....

cheers

Mike ..
I'm curious to know what kind of welder and rod you are using..
A 1/8th 7018 rod would work dandy on that project..
Damned fine place to work on a snowy day in Windsor..Keep up the detailed progress..

Hi Alex,

I am using a Miller 135 mig welder with gas. The settings are 40 for the wire feed and 4 for the voltage. The Miller 135 has a variable voltage setting which allows for more heat control over the a/b/c/d type settings found on less expensive models. I am using .30 wire. I don't own an arc welder and do everything with the mig.

cheers for now...

Default CMP box

Hi Mike
I just took a look at your site and am impressed with your work .If you need more fine measurements em me . I would suggest that if you can get to a foundry with a clamp for a pattern they may be able to make some for you . I wonder what happen to the oridginal molds . If you are going to spotweld ,drill a hole 1/8 th in the out side metal than weld the inside metal till the hole is filled . I am doing the wood in a 1930 Fourdor Ford and will do a manual how I did it .I sure could have used one .It was a 2&1/2 month job .

Default The continnnnnuing stoooory of a man and his box

Back again after a couple of days...been busy but managed to get a bit more done on the box.

First off, thanks for the compliment George...I could not have accomplished what I have done so far without your excellent instructions. Koodos to you.

Spent quite a bit of time grinding 1/4 inch plate to form bits and pieces. On a humorous note...I was busy bending the funny angles for the end of the box and got distracted just before welding one on. After getting back to the box I fitted the piece I had just cut and bent from the template I had used and much to my confusion there was too much of an overhang on one end...I thought mmmm must of made an error...oh well I will weld it in place and grind the overhang off. Got the piece welded on and went in for supper. It bothered me all through the shrimps and muscles...after dinner I went back out and looked at it one more time....I welded the bugger upside down... so grind and cut it out...make a new one and put it in the right way....HEY! no overhang, a perfect fit. Any way....here is a pic of my progress so far....tomorrow the lids get made and put on.

BTW the wine from La Fiole du Pape and is Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Default Out in the day light

Well I am back at it after a week in Ottawa lernen stuff and meeting some of the ROTTERs. Had a great time and wish to thank the "crew". I rolled the Ford out of the shelter in preparation to turn it around and put it in the garage nose first. This will certainly make it easier to drop the engine and tranny in...as well as start wiring it. Also this will give me some of the tarp area to store the cargo box which if all goes to plan will be here tomorrow...that will be another story.....anyway till tomorrow...by the way Naniamo BC got 20+cm of snow last night and this morning....
Cheers

Default When do you start the production run....???

Hi Walter

Now that you guys have the bugs all sorted out and gained practical experience....... when are you going to start producing the clam shells for retail.....

Mike...... yours will be custom to fit your 10:50s I presume..?

Nice repro job....... if it was not for the rust pits on the old one they would be hard to tell apart from the real stuff....

Default clamshells production run

Hi Bob,

Actually what I plan on doing is making "a few" pieces from the mold and save them for when someone needs to build a set. I won't do the fine work, I will leave that to who ever needs them. And yes I will be making a custom set for the 10.50s and a set for the 9.00s in preparation for the next owner of the truck...Looking forward to meeting you in Ottawa....all bookings have been made. I have spare time on Sunday 13 Apr....don't fly out till early evening. I can still pack my coveralls...
