A red square with a white 56 is used by the second battalion in the senior brigade of an infantry or airborne division. This true for both Canadian and British units. The red square with the white 55 is the 1st battalion of the same brigade. On the other side of the vehicle would be a patch that indicates which division the vehicle belonged to.

This C15A has a faint "CZ" on the door indicating Canadian service. I looked it up and this unit sign indicates service with The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry or The Regina Rifle Regiment. The owner now needs to find traces of the formation sign to pinpoint the battalion his truck served with.
