Smile serial number info

Hi Gilles,

No, I don't think the same serial number can be used on more a different GM model.

The GM CMP chassis serial number consists of 10 digits:

The first digit is the contract year of the vehicle.
The next 4 digits are the factory series number, e.g. 8444 is for a C15A. ( 8442 is for the C-60S - 3 ton 4x4, 134" wheelbase )
The last 5 digits represent the number of the vehicle in order of manufacture, beginning at 00001, for the model year.

One source for this information is on pages A-2 to A-10 in the MB-C2 Maintenance Manual.

Your C15A serial number seems to be for a C60S and has one too many digits (6) after the model number, but data plate errors do happen.

GM CMP production stopped around the end of August, 1945

Hope this helps.

Brian
