Thanks Hanno, it would seem that there are more of these lorries around than I thought. The nice man at the REME museum told me that the majority of the survivors come from Ireland, I wonder why? Out here in Italy the six cylinder morris engine was not very highly regarded apparently, and those vehicles sold on to the civilian market were scrapped very soon after the war. The engine on mine died because the hot spot on the inlet manifold had corroded which led to a holed piston, and this happened whilst it was still in sevice with the Italian army. I wonder if this was a common failing....

Thanks again,
Stef

Well, basically because the Irish Defence Forces use their equipment for a long time. They had four Leyland Retrievers in service from 1939 to 1979! The National Transport Museum of Ireland also has an "Army Morris CDSW 3-axle Gun Tractor 1939" on stock.
Also because the Irish took good such good care of them during some 50 years, we now have two Landsverk L180 armoured cars preserved in Holland.

Hi Stefano,

There is another fully restored Morris CD/SW Light Breakdown in the Military vehicle museum in Newcastle upon tyne in Great Britain. I am not sure if it is one of the tractors pictured in this tread allready.

I do have some pictures of this one, but I have to look on my old computer.

Good luck with your Morris's!

Alex, The Netherlands

Hi Stefano,

I have recently bought a CDSW LAD and a CDFW along with a pile of spares. Let me know if I can help. I am hoping to bring her to Beltring this year. She is very complete and original even down to the tools and equipment which includes the tyre overchains.

Best regards

Torbin,

Rory told me that there were two morrises for sale but I 'phoned late (blimey, even the overchains... ). Please let me know if you've got bits you want to sell. I'm still doing the engine (was in a field for thirty years with the head off... ) - gearbox and winch next...
Cheers,
Stefano

Torbin,
Try E.P. Services (Tel. 01902 452914). All they do are water pumps, and they did a great job on mine.
Cheers,
Stef

The two ball bearings are bog standard off the shelf types . The rear bearing is different to the front . I managed to rebuild a OH pump here using a seal from something else . I ended up using two of the front bearings ( cheaper ) and modified something .. cant remember what i did !

Ah yes ,It's on my website :

Hi Larry, Thats my truck!!! I bought it recently from a guy in Wiltshire along with a CDFW. She is a bit sorry having been in dry storage for probably 20 years but I got her running at the weekend, albeit on five cyliders due to a worn out dizzy cap. Same paintwork and everything!!. T Jones. e-mail

Tobin,

Just saw you post now I've got the handbook and spare parts catalogue (that would be more useful if it had illustrations it must be said...), but I would love the stowage drawings Les, I'll post a few pics of the engine soon.

thanks all,

Stef

I think I know that one, it is "stored" in the museum but privately owned.

I have seen this up close and followed it to the private "home" with young Rory Ballard as its passenger, its largely original but we'd both agree "restored" is perhaps a bit to strong. The engine needs some serious work too. . . .

Probably the wrong Richard, however, if you refer to the diffs than its SAE140 gear oil to GL1 spec.

The use of EP or Hypoid gear oils will eat the bronze crown wheels of these worm drive diffs.

Its not uncommon to find these bolted-up bronze crown wheels missing, the REME museum example at Bordon here is just such, they obviously fetched a good price once upon a time with the scrap man; it is a big chunk of bronze.

Driving one axle of a CDSW is a bit of a disaster since the axle linkages have the effect of lifting the driving wheels and applying more down load to the non-driving set, not a problem when both axles are driven as it balances itself and aids cross-country mobility as designed, however with only one driven, a slight slope on wet grass can defeat it as I have witnessed.
