Dear Kevin,

I think that when I will be ready to post the data you are looking for then I will create new thread about Polish WD serial numbers or maybe generally about Commonwealth and Allied serial numbers on the tanks because when I post a hundred Polish WD serials of various AFVs of the Polish 1st Armoured Div. in the thread dedicated only to Sherman III then MLU moderators will organize for me the Court-Martial and execute me. And, frankly speaking, no wonder...

Yes, good question, but I am unable to explain it. In Poland it is described as normal practice and nobody sees something strange in this fact.

Best regards

Default Polish vehicles

Thank you that is probably a good idea to open a new thread, on what is a new subject.
I am still unsure as to why only Polish vehicles, at least all those I have come across, have some 7 digit WD T serials.
Two examples that come to mind T1290295 a Valentine, a photo of this used to be on the AFV Interiors website and T2612884 a Universal Carrier, photo from British Pathe News.

Cheers

Ah, many thanks Mr. M4A4 Barrell.

I think you got my drift anyway.

Hmm,... as I can hear there is a controversion if the Polish 1st Armoured Div. used the M4A2s or not. It is classic question of competence/incompetence of the authors of various books. Maybe my colleagues from Poland will write a little more about it.

Best

Default M4A2 Direct Vision

Hi All

Just a quick note the Photo at then top of the thread is of a M4A2 Direct Vision hull type . possibly one of the Reworked tanks supplied from US Army Training units.

Unfortunately the formations M4A2 kit is of a mid production welded hull with applique Armour. To build the tank in the photo you would need to use the Legends M4A2 Sherman conversion kit.

Interestingly In British Tanks in Normandy by L Fortin. on Page 18, is a photo of Brigadiers Harveys Command tank which is a Re worked M4A2, and on 24 is another Direct vision hull tank.

I hope this might be of interest.

Cheers

Ian

I am looking for Canadian / British units that used the Sherman III, in NWE preferably.
Any tank names, matching WD numbers would be a bonus.

Maybe a bit late, but you might still be interested.
Got 3 Sherman III photo's of 2nd. Can. Armd. Brig. B squadron Fort Garry Horse, in the photo's are 2 Sherman III's and the photo's are taken from 3 different angles, WD numbers are T229994 and T229880.
The photo's are taken on Sunday 15 April 1945 on the crossing Rademarkt Zuiderdiep in Groningen.
Photo's are scanned from: "Vier Dagen in April" (4 Days in April) 1999 by MH Huizinga & B van Leusen ISBN 90-76457-05-0 and 32 Authentieke foto's van de bevrijding van Groningen (32 authentic photo's of the Groningen Liberation) 1970 N.V. Foresta Groningen.

Hope it's still helpfull, cheers Ronald.

Default It is never too late.

Hi Ronald,

Thank you for posting the photos.
Although I had both numbers listed you have actually clarified something for me. I originally had the numbers as CT numbers but it clear that the number is T not CT as many Canadian vehicles are prefixed. Perhaps they were relatively new tanks when the photo was first taken.
Please post anymore you have all are of interest.

Cheers
Kevin
