Peter Ford once dropped in at the Canadian Army Depot in London, Ontario in the 1980's and met a Commisionaire who had worked at the Depot for a number of years in the 1950's and 1960's. He told Peter that on many occasions, he had been detailed to dispose of items that, for whatever reason the military did not want flowing through Crown Assets. They used to be taken to some sort of range in the area, where they were either burned or buried. One trip to this range involved boxes of brand new CMP and other World War Two equipment manuals that were all burned.

I have heard of a lot of surplus aircraft being burned after the war somewhere in Alberta as well. That was probably back when War Assets was in charge of disposal. Recently also saw a number of photos of the RAF torching surplus Mosquitoes in Egypt at the end of the war, and now how many of those are still flying?

Almost makes you sick when you see the images and media of when our beloved F111s were simply jamed in a hole and buried . Would have been good to see them all find new homes in many of our museums or mothballed or made open to public sale, im sure there would have been pleanty of collectors. Be nice having one parked in the hangar......fuel consuption may be of concern but, particually during a dump and burn

F-111 fans were outraged that many of the iconic RAAF fighter jets had been dumped at a landfill site near Ipswich. A RAAF spokesman confirmed to Ipswich News on Thursday that 23 of the planes had been dumped at the Swanbank landfill site. The jets had been located at RAAF Base Amberley, near Ipswich, before being decommissioned late last year.

Well on the bright side, imagine the thrill our grandchildren will have when somebody rediscovers them 60 years from now.

At least they were not converted to target drones like the last of Canada's Sabre Jets. I think there might even be a company in Moncton, NB still doing that work for the US Air Force. Never ceases to amaze me how anti aircraft missile manufacturers rave so much about how great their latest toy is after filming it shoot down a 1950's fighter plane flying a straight and level line!

There is a Lanc buried under the runway extension at CFB Comox on vancouver island, also a sherman tank and several other vechicles buried in the same location.
There is another lanc in the middle of the range area at CFB Borden.
When the yanks left Eureka on hidleburg island they buried tons of stuff.

There is only one Mosquito still air worthy on the planet. It has been built in New Zealand, and is currently being stripped to ship it to its owner in the U.S.of A.

Back in the 1950's a private land owner used several UC Mk I Carriers as road fill on a road on his property. That road is now a minor Provincial Highway and the Carriers are still there.

I also recall many years ago a Lanc and two Horsa's on the ranges in CFB Shilo, along with one or two Shermans. When they were finally shot up so bad, they brought in two Centurions as targets. Not sure what is left of them these days.

Off and on in the 1970's and 1980's, I heard from several sources that somebody in the lake country area of Manitoba had acquired a Lanc which the owner pulled the wings off and stored the whole plane in a barn.

Used to hear a lot at one time about P-51's buried in a pit at the old CFB Rivers site, but I don't think anyone ever went to check it out.

While I think of it, what is the story on these Burma Spitfires? I gather the exploration at Rangoon Airport was shut down, but I am not certain if the entire project died, or is exploration still being done at one of the other old RAF bases in Burma.

Maybe Pounds recovered them all years ago and spirited them all back to their yard in England.

From what I read they were never there, just a fantasy.
