Wooden ammo box
I picked up this wooden ammo box today. From the bits of writing that's left it's a 1942 box for a belt-fed Browning 30-06 including tracers and the full weight was 83 pounds. The belting on the lid isn't original and I'm not sure about the big Ms on the ends.
Can anybody add anything else?

Can you see an "H" number, date and letter code stamped in the base or on the lid? This would identify it. The metal straps on the bottom in image 1 seem to be the lid securing straps but they should be on the top, is there any evidence that they have been relocated?

You can see where the straps were attached at the top before. C.N.F. 1942 is stamped on the end grain of the left side panel in picture 2.

Similar.....
I have a similar box but it contained two large sardine cans each holding about 103 rounds of 303 on a canvass belt. Cans have a large key to roll back the soldered metal cover much like a regualr size sardine can. One can is still unopened. Lid had no hinges...... top was held in place by 4 metal pins similar to large cotter pins or 36 mill pins tied to a string....... tar paper wrapping inside.
I have used another similar wooden container to store black powder for re-enactments....... Mine is dated early 50s..... bought in downtown Montreal surplus store in the early 80s for 90 some dollars..... Bob
