Don't know what the proper toast is, but consider it made. Attached is my favorite picture of then Princes Elizabeth.
Having dinner tonight with my kids at the local "British Pub" http://www.thebirchwoodinn.com/ so I'll lift a glass. Owners of the Pub love it when we drive the BBC HUP and park in front of the place.

It's also SUNRAY MINOR's birthday today, too, so I have double the reason to celebrate. But the old girl's in pretty good shape for 80, though, eh?
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN! PS: Phil, a suitable toast is simple. Standing with one's glass raised, it's "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Queen". They respond by standing and echoing "The Queen" before drinking.

Saw Her Majesty here in Montreal back in '54 while she was still a princess and I was but a wee lad..What a beautiful lady,Then in 1994 saw the Queen Mum at McGill Stadium, when the Black Watch Regiment, together with their pipes and drums, including the Royal Canadian Artillary brass band performed the "Trooping of the Colors " parade on the field. There's nothing finer than royal pageantry.

"Quel hommage".But what do I know!!Having performed as a drummer, with a piper ,at many of these mess dinners, and having toasted The Queen, the regiment or squadron(I was air force),the C.O. of the unit, the P.M. ,and all other higher mucky-mucks,meanwhile ,hoisting a wee dram of Drambuie, for each toast,I guess I agree with you as far as the aftermath is concerned."Quel dommage"(translation "Big damage"With the highlanders, part of the aftermath is to partake in a wee pinch of snuff, pinched out of the top of a ram's head decanter. My piper and I nearly killed ourselves laughing because this stuff is a dark brown in color.Combined with perspiration, having entertained the officers with a few reditions on the pipes and drum, added to the sneeze condition acquired in both nostrils as you sneeze with each sniff,we looked like a couple of Cape Briton coal miners,Oh but for the good old days!!Oh I forgot, add in the cigar smoke in the room after their supper.

Yes, in all the Mess Dinners and Dinings In I've been to, Her Majesty is "ususally" toasted in French but that is, "usually", replied to by us "The Queen" in a loud voice. My perspective is narrowed by most of the dinners I attended were Regimental in nature. We're only boisterous at our own parties, of course. I've only been to a couple of "Other Trade" or "Mixed" ![]() ![]() That and at Corps functions I can stand for 4 Regimental Marches!! ![]() regards Darrell |

Yeah, Garry and Darrell:
Garry: Wasn't it a long draught of Scotch from the quaich dish after a Mess Dinner? Darrell: I can just imagine the chaos during a "mixed" Mess Dinner...All Arms trying to outdo theirselves with regard to "proper" Mess etiquette, according to their Regimental protocols. (Who passes what decanter to whom on the left or the right, and on or off the table...(civilians just wouldn't understand!) And who the Hell knows what some other unit's Regimental is...(stand up, sit down...do what the head table does). Sound familiar?

I got to see the other side also. At the Christmas Mess, as the camp's oldest Corporal I swapped tunics with the R.S.M. and sat at the head table alongside Mjr. Gen. Ross, the Force Commander; our camp's C.O. and their lovely wifes! Now there's another story! Shades of Animal House! ![]() ![]() ![]()

We also did a similar thing, having the youngest "boy soldier" trading tunics with the CO and he (the young 'un) sitting to the CO's right during dinner. Good stuff...Regimental and all that...here's to us! ![]()
