Conquest of Western Europe
I have now heard this story, from two sources, regarding the re-unification of Germany. I was told that when the West German military took over the former East German facilities, large quantities of detailed maps of western Europe were found, as well as medals that had been struck for reaching the English Channel. Has anyone else heard these stories or can anyone point me to where it can be substantiated.
If this is true, it would certainly point to the seriousness of the Warsaw Pact (Soviet Union) to bring the rest of Europe under it's influence. Perry |

Perry,
Don't know anything about the medals (sounds to me like someone has embellished the map story) but the discovery of the maps does not necessarily indicate anything sinister. All NATO armies in Europe would also have had tons of maps of the opposing team territory as well. If a war broke out, for whatever reason - and let's not forget the west was just as capable of starting the show (Kennedy's brinkmanship over Cuba missiles for example)- the most essential basic ready supplies would have been maps. When I did an exchange Army course in England in 1970 it was common doctrine to discuss how many days it would take the Russians to reach the Channel. There was absolutely no question of stopping them short of nuclear war! Lang Last edited by Lang; 23-12-12 at 21:36. |

Why don't I ask a retired German Air Force air traffic controller who worked on the DDR base with their MiG29s after reunification.
