RIP sapper Ken Platt
Ken Pratt March 7 1919 ....DEC 15 2014
As a Sapper in the 2nd division oh the Royal Canadian Engineers Ken was boots on ground through Operation Jubilee (Dieppe raid) and operation overload (Battle for Caen and Falaise Pocket) to the liberation of France and Holland in 1945. Ken was awarded the French National Order the Legion of Honour this year. Ken always said "If you lived it, that is the way it was, dont need no damn paper pusher to be a expert on everything'" Eg bridge plate #5 was never the same, from fancy to childish. He was a bitter soldier due to the fact that the rescue from Dieppe was in chaos, from the beach Ken and a few other able soldiers were towed to the middle of the channel and ordered overboard for later pick up , this was ok because the sorry lot on shore needed off, Alas some british bloke said he was AWOL and confined to base, Sir, you protest too much. Never had any use for the British mukkity mucks during the war or after same for the French. Would never go back Ken was a good neighbour but I did move my army trucks out of his Vision, he said not all memories are good but that is what you remember "RIP" |

I know the man who nominated him for the Legion of Honour. There weren't many oldtimers left, and a couple were in declining health when the medals came through. Glad he got his before standing down.
