Wireless set 19 coax modern subtitute
Gents,
What is the proper and available substitute to make Wireless set 19 coax cables ? I plan to built several coax cables for my 19 set using the original Pye coax connectors. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards. Daniel |

As a starting point, I'd suggest Uniradio 67 (RG-213), but be warned that the dimensions have changed over the years and it's no longer 0.45" o.d. but 0.405" and you may need to sleeve it with tape. I'll have a further rummage and see if I can find a better match, but one may no longer exist. Chris. |

WS #19 RF cables impedance.
Daniel, use RG-11 coax.
I measured the dimensions of the original coax that fitted the Pye connectors many years ago and that gave 75 ohms of impedance. And, a RG-11 coax have the same dimensions as the original ones. RG-8 can be used also, as the lines are too short to represent any mismatch. Variation in cables capacitance will be balanced by the variometer anyways. |

"RG-11 coax have the same dimensions as the original ones." One source I looked at also gave RG-11 as having an OD of .405". Would heat shrink tube be a better material for packing the smaller wires out to the 0.45" dimension? I would think the adhesive lined version (maybe the unlined version too) should stay in place better than tape if the cable is moved about. According to answers.com - RG-11/U is 75ohm and is usually triple/quad shielded and typically has a maximum attenuation of 3.65. RG-213/U is common form amateur radio and is 50 ohms and is single shielded with about a 5.95 attenuation. I don't know anywhere near enough about the subject to be able tell what this might do if you are looking for a functional as opposed to cosmetic substitute. |
