Tilt mounting
Here's a picture of the tilt frame mounting. It's propped up a few inches so you can see how it works. The channel has a piece of flat iron welded across the top of it that the mounting bolt and the top bow goes through too. This would be so the wing nut is out in the open where you can get at it from the top. I don't have the wing nuts so it just has 5/16 bolts and nuts holding it now. Notice that the end bows are threaded where they protrude through the bottom of the channel so the legs can thread on. The centre bows stick through too but they aren't threaded. The channel is wide enough so the ends of the bows are beyond the outside of the box itself. From pictures I've seen it looks like a pipe coupler threads on to them, then a short pipe (6" or so) and then a long coupler. The hinged leg setup goes up into this long coupler and must be able to move up and down but not fall out. This way when the legs are in use the hinge will be up inside the coupler and won't be able to hinge any more. If anybody has a better idea on how this works, let me know. It doesn't show in the picture but the two footman loops for the strap that stows the legs are still there on the side of the box. The twisting knobs that hold the front of the canvas inside the box are there too.
Does anyone have any details of how the radio was attached? Mike, I have a few pages of that list, but would appreciate it if you would send a copy of the whole thing. Thanks. That picture above with the body on my S10 was taken in Biggar, Sask., where the world record whitetail deer was shot. Last edited by cletrac (RIP); 18-02-08 at 22:38. |

Good ....
Ah ! Excellent David , slowly but surely we are putting together the whole story for future 8 cwt restorers .
I had no idea about those threads on the end . Can you tell what gauge the U channel is ? Is it 1/8" thick I tried some drawings of the frame mounts some years ago , but I was only guessing . Your pics clear it up a lot . In the pic below , you can see the threads just visible on the lower folding pipe section . The radio sat on a wooden bench on the forward Rh side . Battery boxes sat on the floor and the radios ancillaries were mounted along the RH side . Can you PM me your postal address please . Mike

I have been piecing it all together , but only having photos to go by , its been very difficult . You have a head start , having the real thing in your hand , so to speak .
Would love a drawing with the frame dimensions , e.g., height and details . But , I appreciate that you must have other things to do . Mike

Here's a top view of the tilt frame. The channel is 3" x 1" outside measurement. It's 57.25" long and is made from 1/8" stock. The top plates are 2" x 3" and are welded on flush with the end of the channel then the end caps are welded on so the channel ends up being 57.5" long.

Here's a picture of the back end.The sign holder got bent on loading but you can see that the rest is quite straight. There's even one of the hinges still there. It only has the hole for the tail light on the drivers side while some pictures show them on both sides. If it looks cold in the picture that's because it was 15 below F with quite a wind. I'm waiting for it to warm up a few degrees before unloading. Maybe in a few days.

Here's a picture of an 11 set in place in the truck from the NZ history site. It's the only photo I've been able to find that shows the equipment in the back. They must have used that netting to secure the equipment when moving.
Does anyone have any more photos that show the equipment in place?

Here's the measurements for the top bows. The bow pipes stick through the channels 3/4". The vertical measurements are made from the end of the bow.

I figured out why the centre lengthwise pipe on the top bow assembly is bolted in and the rest of the assembly is all welded together. In that NZ picture of the operator in the back of the truck you can see that the centre pipe is covered in canvas. You'd slide the pipe into a sewn in pocket in the canvas and then bolt the pipe into place, then finish installing the cover. This way, if you wanted to roll up the cover, it would end up stowed on top of the bow assembly.

Floor bolt holes
This is a drawing showing the placement of the bolt holes in the floor of the 1A2 body. This was from an 11 cab truck so is the early version and it has holes for the three seat version. With two seats there's two different sets of holes for the rear seat. The second set would move the seat to the left of centre of the body and move it about 8" forward. I haven't seen any photos with the rear seat in this location.
The holes are all for 5/16" bolts.

I was going to ask about the seat hole locations , seems that you have read my mind . Yes, makes sense re: the centre bow of the top frame being bolted in . Mike

This has been fantastic reading, especially from the point of view that i was going to have to try and do something about the frame for the canvas this year. The vehicle I have was (I think) one of the long bodied C8s but had a repro tub with toolboxes etc fitted by the previous owner.
Let me know what you think gents (It featured in the magazine Tracks & wheels No 1 page 53 in its unrestored guise), if anyone can shed any light on it it would be greatly appreciated. http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n...k/P1010095.jpg http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n...C8foremail.jpg |

I finally got to go and see about the 1A2 endgate today and ended up with the whole box. The rest of the box is pretty roughed up but it has the original tail light assembly and a POW holder that I can use.
To my surprise I went into an auto parts store looking for a master cylinder rebuild kit and the parts guy went in the back and grabbed one. It's the same as is used in the 37 to 50 three tons. He apologized because he only had enough rubbers for one wheel cylinder but he's getting more out of Regina and they'll be here tomorrow. Total price $47.

I thought it might be a long body because of some details. One I was looking at was the frame located between the wheels just below the back of the cab, thought it was the holder for a petrol tank? I'm sure someone out in the forum could shed some light. |

There's a 1947 farm license plate on the box I recently hauled home so you can tell how long the farmer used it. He must have hauled a lot of rocks with it though judging by how badly the floor and sides are bent up.
Mike, the taillight bracket is made from 3/16" material. It's 4 3/4" wide; the horizontal flange is 4 3/4" and the vertical flange is 2". The bottom corners are 1" radius and the center of the bulb holes are 2 1/2" apart and 1" from the bottom. The bolt hole centers are 2 1/2" apart. The bolt hole centers in the box are 4 1/2" and 7" from the side of the box and 3 1/4" from the rear of the box. Do you have the measurements for the step that goes below the endgate?

Here's another C8 data plate but this one isn't mine. The serial number is only 150 away from mine.
Colin, those side gas tank mounts are made of angle iron and the originals weren't, so it likely had the short box originally. Anyone replacing the box had to move the tanks so the other box would fit.

Colin, I am conjecting the truck is ex-Canadian rather than British althoughy there were evidently a very few ex-Canadian assembled trucks sold to the Ministry of Supply for UK use:

I just noticed that one of the floor panels on my C8 has a different pattern on it. Has anyone else come across this? The one on the left is the different one. I'm going to check my parts shed to see if I've got one to match the rest.
