The local police were very wary this weekend - no noise complaints from Hammond! Grant, Bob and I made our way out to Chatsworth to join in the Caldwell Convoy No.6. As usual, a great time was had by all. Bob and Grant will add some shots to the CC thread later on.
The photo shows the Hammond Trio well before the beer started flowing in earnest...

The thickness of the wood floor spacer between the top of the frame and the underside of the cab floor is dictated by several things which you will note in the photo the vertical bracket that supports the running board and the floor, and the thickness of the heavy curved floor plates. What I did was mount the vertical brackets and the heavy under-floor plate and the put a straight edge across the frame and measure down to the top of the frame presto the thickness of floor shims.

Max........You are crazier than a Canadian Loon if you come this far to drink tea....... in fact I don't think they had any at CC 6.....
.....tea is not considered an edible subtance in Chatsworth unless it comes in a screw top bottle. Would love to squeeze the old paw Max... hope you make it... Phil....... thanks for the picture... that saves 10 thousand words... on seeing the picture I now realize that the thickness is set by the space provided by all the brackets and 1/2 inch metal reinforcements in the corners..... Now if only I could find the straight edge....... Bob.....

Bob our cab 11 doen't have the spacers under the corner of the cab, the 12cabs that are here have the spacers on them. It's was a good idea that the chevs used these spacers as fords didn't use them. Has yours got them
they tell me that I have a pretty big paw, good for carrying blitz parts home he he .... Max |

.... before you get here.......
Max I am playing tricks with my cab 11. I acquired a cab 12 frame and floor...... upon closer examination my checker plate...dash and dots.... from my cab 11 is heavily rusted and in some place the pattern is almost gone.... on the other hand the cab 12 is in very good shape. Plans are to use the large rear cab 12 section and the two front half section from the cab 11. In addition the good cab 12 floor has a 6x6 inch section cut out right over the tranny...... so I will transplant the equivalent portion from the cab 11 which by coincidence is in good shape in tha area. Final results will be a cab 11.055 version of the cab 12.... Having examined the extra bracing of the cab 12 1/2 inch steel reinforcements, I would be silly not to use them...... that extra plate must add a significant amount of stiffness to the back wall which is only bolted on the 1/4 floor plate. Doing so will require me to use the special running board brackets of the cab 12 as the cab 11 brackets are 1/2 to high...... Again I will take the bestest parts from the cab 11 and cab 12 to make running boards that are in good shape and fits. Someone said... not toooo long ago.... that you cannot restore one truck by itself...... you need a few more to cannibalize the best parts. Hardly a weekend goes by that one of us 3 doesn't go running to the back field to either check on of the parts truck or get some elusive part from them. Hang in there.... Bob

Boobee, I think you are wrong on this one. I saw with my very own eyes our own estemed Jiff partaking of that very liquid that started some revolution way back before CMPs. He was exiting Dan's residence at CC6. We need a Smilie with one of those steaming cups.
Cheers, Barry

Saturday was a mixed bag of weather - warm/cool/sunny and wet. Most of the day was spent indoors working on the mysteries of master cylinders and steering mechanisms.
Bob performed an autopsy on one of his twisted steering assemblies and learned that the horn contact is a complicated little item. We didn't think of taking photos of the interior set up of the horn contact... Grant and I decided to disassemble our respective master cylinders. His to clean, mine to determine why it wasn't working. I found a spare piece inside. A small brass ring - the same size as the one on the main cup was found. I'm guessing it was stuck to the cut and came loose after being put under pressure. After carefully examining our Alex Blair Manuals manual, Grant and I reassembled our masters cylinders. I put mine back on the HUP but ran out of time. I'll try pressurizing the brake system on Monday morning (after sneeking out of the house at O'dark thirty tomorro morning). Here is a shot of the reinstalled culprit:

No luck today getting some pedal pressure. I am thinking of going the safe route and installing a modern master cylinder (m/c). Anyone out there who met with success with a modern m/c?
The morning was spent setting up for more sandblasting. Bob and Grant set up the blasting table with a ton of bits and pieces.

Bob blasted the morning away. Grant cleaned up some more steering parts, and I sorted various nuts and bolts. All in all, it was a great way to celebrate our day off (gummint workers and all that jazz...).

Bob, Grant and I decided to drive down to Oshawa for the annual parts fest and displays. Some treasures were found, old acquaintences renewed and we cast our envious eyes on the various pieces of rolling CMP stock.
Grant took some detailed photos of the wireless CMP.

We spend considerable time going over a C60 Wrecker. It was a very interesting restoration. The photo log showed the before, during and after shots. A lot of time and effort went into this beast.

We took a detour to the S&P Museum. Luckily, Mike had just pulled in. We got the royal tour of the Polsten quad.
Mike very much looking like the spider talking to the fly...

My buddy Dan from Halifax is in Ottawa visiting us before heading out to the big PMI conference in Flordia. He made the mistake of asking me what I did in my spare time and did it relate to all the old truck photos and info that was hanging around my office.
Well...a picture, or a CMP is worth 1000s of words, so I dragged him out to Hammond to see my HUP, and Bob/Grant's trucks. After the tour he looked at me and said (words to the effect) "This is not a hobby. This is an obsession". Couldn't agree more. Whilst there, I took some shots of my radiator. I note with great glee that there is enough space between the rad and fan to prevent mutual interference. However, the rad looks like it is sitting too high. When we put the front clip on we will get a better appreciation of the fit. Dvr side:

Your engine mount in the last shot is up the other way to mine. I have the wide plate on top so it shield the rubber somewhat from oil. I have seen a light guage cover over it all too.
Obviously you don't intend to have any leaks anyway, with the efforts you are putting in. The spacer under the radiator is a new one to me too. Our 1943 C8AX's don't have that, just the rubber piece. Keep up the good work Rob |

Hi Rob,
The fun thing with 45 HUPs is that one must make assumptions (and we all know how the root word "assume" breaks down) about how things are assembled. To my knowledge there are no 45 HUP manuals available, so I either have to go with the way the rad was set up when I got the HUP, or rely on other's expertise. The original rad came out of a commercial Dodge product, so I can't go by that set up. I have seen '43 HUPs with and without the metal spacer, with and without the rubber gaskets, some with one gasket and the spacer...and so on. I will be stopping by the CWM once they remove all the Jazz Fest crap away from the parking lot, to film the 45 HUP and get some shots of the rad support set up. If Mark Perry is looking in, perhaps you can send some shots of your 45 HUP's rad set up. Any help on 45 HUPs would be greatly appreciated!!

I just had a look at the MB-C2 Manual (which includes data on the C8A but not later models) and found a diagram for engine mountings (Engine-pp K-4 - fig.6 - Front Engine Mounting). Does not look anything like my set up...like I said, 45's are fun!

The Missus gave me a great anniversary gift: Time at the Barn! Yep! 10 years in Ottawa. This is the longest period of time I spent in one place in my life. The place kinda grows on you...plus there are great folk around who like old rusty trucks.
Speaking of which, I decided to fit my HUP windows together. I had to salvage those odd windshield screws and small nuts from the "wagon line" of wrecks. I managed to find enough to do one window and now am searching for modern replacement screws, nuts and bolts. Bob has an assortment of various nuts and bolts and I found replacements for the screws that hold the interior bracket to the top rail. Just might get the other window sorted out next week. The parts:
