It came back in bits and the internals missing :-( the engine left my house seized but otherwise complete hence my conundrum.

At the time, despite building engines for the previous decade, I thought I would allow someone else to do the rebuild, along with another two engines that were getting done at the time. Quotes that were coming back for components (via belcher engineering) were a major concern so the plug was pulled and the engine recovered all be it a total basket case at this point. I was getting quotes like £50 for a pair of bearing shells and told they were super rare... Again this info from belcher ! I later found that the info given was utter utter bollox so belcher won't get my cash ever again. There was also a mixup with my gearbox which made me very very nervous indeed, it may have been completely innocent but nonetheless, as a result the whole job was aborted and now I am trying to find the missing items.

V8s are an expensive lump to rebuild , I personally have not had a problem with Belchers but it is some times better to deal direct with MAC in the states if you are not in a hurry for the parts.

On the other subject , sorry to hit a sore point !

Yeah it's done now so I will plod on ! Belchers are not cheap they quoted 50 quid for a pair if bearing shells another source in the UK quoted £60 for the entire set ! Stuff like £200 for a set of gaskets !!!!! Not a chance, I would make my own before I pay that.

I have a new set of rings sorted, need to order my mains and big ends, need some new head studs (I always replace these on any build) need a crank re grind to 20 thou, I want to rebuild both water pumps, rebuild the oil pump, gaskets, carb, dizzy that was missing (got one off you Shaun thanks) then generator rebuild etc, I have a feeling no doubt the spacers etc for the fan will be missing, but fingers crossed !!

Well I thought I best get my backside into the garage today as the countdown clock for W&P is always ticking !!! I wanted to mok up the engine deck to make sure everything lines up as it should.... For the better part it dies, but there are areas which will need a tweak which is understandable given the length of time it has been hanging inside the carrier, or lying in the cold Canadian snow !

The front part seems ok, and I had not realised I had some of the curved air deflector left so it was a nice suprise to find I only need to graft two short sections onto each end !

Inside the engine bay was another matter

For starters the deck has been snapped at some point and shoddily welded back together, this is not really an issue as I can sharp weld it back again. The lower rail for this side I only have a third of it left so will need to make the rest to graft onto it.

The other rail is complete and bolted in spot on ! Just need to tweak the posts from the top deck, as you can see they have both sprung.

I sat and tried to remember what goes where on the top cover..... Any ideas ?

Richie I have sections of steel already curled to the correct radius for the air deflector. I have just put your name on some of it . Good skills on getting it to the workshop on Boxing Day !

Well she ain't going to rise out of her own ashes without a lil but help from moi.

Cheers for that Shaun.

Still need to find a pair of front to rear brake linkage rods, the originals are beyond safe use, so that's another thing on the list. Emailed the supplier today for some engine bits, once they come I can get started... Going to drill out the core plugs and clean the block properly before I rebuild it. Unless there is an easier way to clean the oil galleries. Would like to get the gunners firing aperture rifle rest drilled and mounted too

Plenty to do before July !

Go to my thread "Control Rods Riveted U.C." It tells you how long and how much thread. Do them on a lathe (rod in the chuck and carefully supported) Square the die stock with the tailstock. The rod is medium tensile 7/16".
Both sides are the same length.
To do your lower engine rail, it would help heaps if you can borrow one.
Does this pic help? (It is an AOP sorry)

Cheers Lynn

Ross sent me an email with the correct detail on what I don't get is there only appears to be two holes close together for the spare barrel box ? I would have thought the holes would be far apart.

(Ross I hope you don't mind matey)

The other end of the barrel box has the same style of bracket. However it is welded to the upper frame rail.

Jordan, that might explain the presence of the welds on the engine deck next to the grill

I thought it had been an after component fitted by the logging company

Well I thought I might have a look at the engine today... I have had a good solid day in the garage... I dragged the thing out of its corner and mounted it onto the engine stand. After a thirty minute stare in dispair, I boiled the kettle made a brew, then set about the damned thing !

I had one final snapped head stud to extract which was made more difficult by having a snapped easy out in it.... It took some time but I got there in the end, so now all studs have been removed and the holes that were shot have been helicoiled ready for some nice ARP studs (if budget allows)

Once that was done I scrubbed the thing down with hot soapy water, and surprisingly the block cleaned up real nice !

Once that was done I began to take stock of what I had been left with, I found a basket of valves which had the guides zip locked together, they were in a sad state. So I thought I might as well start to clean them. I pulled each one down and cleaned the individual components the valve stem was given some light cleaning, and the valve face was cleaned in my lathe with some fine wet and dry. I then oiled them up and built them back into the springs......I am undecided if I am going to replace the guides (as they appear ok )

Three down !

I have also been digging through the bucket o grime to see what bolts I have left.... As I found them I put them back into the block flagging bits back on (these will all come off again for the build)

I have ordered some big end bearings and scored for a full set for 35 quid ! 15 thou undersize.

I still need some main bearings though. I have noticed that my cam is utterly shot as the hard nitride coating has worn off some of the lobes.....hate to think what a new cam is going to cost me !

But on a high note my pal Bill checked my water pumps and both are fine so no need to strip and rebuild them, so the is a few quid saved !

Bit of a mixed bag, it's going to be costly but I will get there somehow.

Richie, once you have rebuilt that 95 h.p. engine block you will be leaving the other 85 h.p. carriers in your dust at W&P 2014.

I need a valve seat cutter that's for sure as a number of the seats are badly pitted as can be seen in the images.

So what do you own a chainsaw for? Was it to enlarge your garage? The photos from outside your place didn't show any trees. Sorry, no cutter. Mine will go to the engine reconditioner
