Taken at a vehicle park Morotai in 1945 I believe and among the well used CMPs is a Chevrolet arty tractor No8 (Aust). What a work of art!

After a second look you are quite right Tony.

So it means that in the early days we probably did get our CMP's back but we only reconised them as new Jap made cars

Despite being in the AWM's files, you will probably find that those vehicles are British rather than Aust, most likely from 28 ANZUK Bde from Korean service, or less likely (in 1955) from BCOF Japan. Other vehicles in the foreground are british types, I see a Bedford MW water cart, Bedford RL and a Morris or two.

I have been caught out here. I thought I would stun you with my brilliance (having owned a 1926 Vauxhall I recognized it immediately) but my lack of knowledge of 1930's English cars has me stumped on those.

I reckon the car behind the Vauxhall is a Morris. These would appear to be impressed vehicles because of their age, bearing in mind the photo was probably taken in 1939/40.

There are no Bedford RL lorries in the photo, all Bedford QL, can see a water tanker as you say, could be Morris or Bedford and there is a 15 cwt wireless there, most likely a Morris Commercial CS8 or C4.

It's intersting how every single vehicle still has the plate for the gas detector paint fitted.

Do you know Les when and where this photograph was taken.

Presumably on active service they would have been quite easily damaged and or discarded by the drivers.

Very interesting to me is that we have here some Thornycroft Hathi trucks of which there must not have been many made and they presumably stayed in OZ as they look in very good shape.

Bill,

These Hathis were bought by the Australian government so would have been disposed of over there. The REME Museum in England had one restored / rebuilt, from basically a bare chassis, some years ago and were desperate to find the correct engine, in the end a similar Thornycroft unit was found as a compromise. The vehicle had survived in the woods hauling timber out and had a Bedford diesel fitted when found.

It was common in N.Africa and Italy, for British army vehicles to have this recognition roundel, it does not mean they are RAF vehicles.

another addition to this thread, a line up of bedford OXC tractors RAF photograhic along with the 24kva generaters. SOme info i have suggests that the power source was provided by Meadows, i think Richard will have awnser to that over to you mate

They are Lister generators on Tasker trailers, I have worked on them many years ago. There were also 15 kva versions.

The Meadows gen set was postwar, 27.5 kva.

I recollect them being of wartime manufacture date and were still in service in and around the early 80's. Very reliable and easy to start with the decompressor and half compression cocks. My memory says that we had problems locating a part which was belt driven from the flywheel or drive shaft, something to do with the generator side, cycles maybe? A suitable alternative was used.

I have the manual for the L-B model5-1-50 and 5-3-50 gen sets..
i covers four (Two single and two twincyl.engines up to 16 brake hp..
I think the generators are only 5KVA and 4 KVA but the manual is complete with parts,maintenance and overhaul sections..It also has the wiring diagrams..I don't know if that would help..Maybe Richard is familiar with the smaller ones too..
