Hanno, I meant the 8 cwt with the wider and longer body without the lockers at the front. I think they were the 2A1 and 2A2. Here's a picture of one in Alberta. They were the 1B1 and 1B2.

Hanno,
I think you're right. After a closer look, on the C8 the body sides above the endgate are square and on the 15 cwt they're tapered. I was going more by the proportions which are pretty close to the same. Live and learn I guess. Here's the back end of that Alberta truck.

So the vehicle pictured above, would that be a GS type vehicle?
And would anybody know if any of these type survive in the UK. I have a suspicion that the vehicle I own is one of these but now has a repro wireless rear on it. |

Here's an excerpt from Gregg's Military Vehicles Profiles. If these vehicles were originally wireless vehicles, they had copper grounding straps connecting all the body panels. Just look under the hood for these straps. The 8 cwts weren't made as GS trucks although I've read somewhere that they were used in that role (particularly the personnel as hauling 4 troops in one vehicle wasn't very efficient) I don't think the 1b series bodies were used on the 11 cabs.
I looked at this truck again and realize that it is a GS box. There aren't any holes in the floor or on the fender ledges to mount seats and radio equipment. A couple of others that I looked at are the same way. The F8 with the 1B2 that was in Drumheller had the mounting holes. Some day I'll measure their location.

The Ford F-8 that I sold David Moore had the wide body. If I remember correctly the builder's plate said W.D. Beath and Son as the builder. Here is the thread about David's truck:

The Salerno vehicle looks a bit like a Humber FWD FFW to me , I don't think it is a Canadian C8 or F8 ?
David, that vehicle in the wadi, the AWM pic , is a Morris Commercial PU , its a great pic for sure ...... I hope this post stays on the MLU forum , my recent posts have dissapeared for some reason . Somebody else mentioned that their posts are going 'west' also . Has a mystery virus got into the system ? I wonder if Geoff has been sucking on too many cans . Or has Hanno taken to smoking those strong dutch cigars ? Maybe its Carmen who's the culprit ....Hmmm Mike

Here's a series of pix off Canada at War. The close truck has 20 inch rubber and the next is a C8 with the 1A1 body.

This is the second truck again. The mirrors mount on the top hinge so it's a Chev. There's no Chorehorse so it's the personnel version. It also doesn't have the legs to make the tilt into a tent.
Looking again it's a Ford judging by the push bar setup. The mirrors on the hinges doesn't apply to the 11 or 12 cabs. It's also an early unit with no cab vents and non adjustable mirror arms.

The lineage is there for all to see . The 1936 PU MCC eventually morphing into the Canadian C8 and F8 mishaps !
It would be interesting , which car of the three variants would win a race . The MCC PU had a good turn of speed . The F8 would be in it with a chance too. But the C8 would be plodding along, way behind the others . Cast iron just doesn't want to go up and down as fast as aluminium does . The tilt on the ground , in the tent mode, had a clip on canvas apron . The tilt alone on its sticks would not afford any protection from a side wind or rain . The apron is rarely seen in use and would have been a pain to clip on . It's a clever concept though , and I have never seen it on any other car. So who is driving their 8 cwt to Corowa this year ? Not me . Mike

Having stated that the Cab 11s didn't have the 1B1 bodies and posting that excerpt from Gregg I figured I should post these pics to prove us wrong.
I was wrong. This is a stretched 1A1 body.

After being away from the internet for a few weeks I'd like to revive this thread. Still no photos of the long box version (1B1 and 1B2 body style) in action , though lots of the original short box.
I suspect that the long box 8's may have all stayed in Canada? They were all cab 12, right? And quite late for the 8 ; say, July to Nov 1941? Possibly considered obsolete for front line service by then? David (Hayward) - do you have any evidence of these trucks in UK service? I was interested to see the photos that Cletrac posted of that 8cwt in Alberta. David (Pope) - did you take any other pics of it to show the location of the rear lights (under the LHS rear of the box?). Also, any data plate info or the box maker's plate which I think I can just see rear bottom left - mine is Beath of Toronto. I noted the tilt bows were just like mine with the parallel welded sections to the base of the front and rear bows - to bring the tilt right to the end of the box. Did other CMP's have this refinement? What happened to that Alberta truck , David? Too bad that the lidded bins in the box had been taken out. Hi also to Paul Singleton - thanks for jumping into this thread while I was away. Come out to see the truck sometime! |

That Alberta truck is still there. He has two of them but the other one is disassembled. I'll be going by his place around Easter so I'll stop in and take some detailed photos.
I know of nine 8 cwts within about 100 miles of me. They are: 5 - C8 Cab 11 that had 1A bodies. (2 bodies survive) 1 - C8 Cab 11 with 1B body. (body survives) 2 - C8 Cab 12 with 1B bodies ( both bodies survive) 1 - F8 Cab 12 with 1B body. (body survives) This C8 is close to home. It's in extraordinary condition but the owner won't part with it. He's even got a new set of tires stored away since the 1970s. He had a sprayer mounted on the back. The 1A body is long gone. Note the lack of cab vents.

Here'a another from the Factory Photos CD. The camo paint job is a three colour scheme. Would this be the camo paint job they were given before they figured out that the disrupyive pattern had to be put on after shipping overseas? I've seen other pix with the same type of camo scheme. What would the three colours likely have been?
I started a new thread about this 3 colour camo.

I was just looking through these pix again and noticed that the one
"Not the best of pictures but a snap shot of a CMP 8cwt taken at Capuzzo in may 1942" is a 12 cab Ford with a 1A2 wireless box on it. Now we know that at least a few 12 cabs were made that way. Colin R take note. I edited the text in some of the preceding pix where they're cab 12s with 1A2 boxes.
