This one is a Bombardier J-5 tractor platform with something else on top...

The armored snows had double wheels and tracks, solid tires and steel sprockets.... plus reinforced crosslinks...

I wouldn't advise trying to make one from a Muskeg or J-5... if accuracy counts.

For those who wondered about the Penguin Mark II "#8", it has been completely destroyed.

While booting around the back forest in my frankencarrier the other day I spotted some track protruding from the ground. I pulled it out with the carrier and what I have is about 14 feet of double track...most of the cross pieces rusty, some all the way through, but it is friggen heavy for a rubber/metal track. I'll get some pictures this weekend and look around for more parts...

sadly, i was talking to a fellow here in Quebec not long ago who said he came across an armoured snomo a few years earlier. The owner had died and his elderly widow would sell but wanted too high a price...It ended up scrapped...

Meanwhile Convoy Mag number 28 has a couple of photos of military snomachines including a Penguin awaiting restoration at Calnan`s
and Convoy 29 has a feature of sorts on Penguins including one found at a farm auction our western Canada...no idea what became of it.

OK, too late for the 2003 Challenge, but here are 2 Muskeg Tractors, a 50's version with a Chrysler Flathead 6, and a Diesel engined version from the 70's. For those who don't know this part of Australia, Agnes Waters is probably the LAST place you would need a Snowmobile, and it looks like these have been used on the beach.

Nice looking machines, they can show up anywhere in the world ! Bombardier went to large wheel axles in 1960, the dust caps are about 3" in the round on a large axle wheels. The side rail design changed ( strengthened) as they improved in the late 60's. The serial tag if missing off the dash or back wall behind the driver is also stamped on the right front bumper.
Bombardier fever is a lot like Green fever, it's addictive. The pic is of one of my Muskegs, a 1972 with a 318 dodge motor .

I grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, and did my first and second parachute jumps at the little dropzone in Valcourt, home of Bombardier. Most of the municipal works departments had small enclosed cab sidewalk plows for snow removal. The arched roof and side rail designs were common sights. I sincerely doubt any were wartime vintage, but it shows that Bombardier kept a few good design elements for many years.
