..... you might want to consider a small plastic squirt bottle to run the engine without a fuel tank...... but you will need a student to squirt repeatedly to keep the engine running....... truth be known I have moved trucks across the yard using squirt bottles...... Rob was my official squirter sitting on the fender of the Dodge power wagon while I steerred the bugger to a new location.

No need for squirting, so everyone relax. The students filled the gas tanks and we got the lines working so that we can now start her up and drive it to move it.
We also found a company that will paint her for free. We are going with dog terd brown. Does anyone know where to get the instrument cluster (speedometer, gas gauge etc). .I don't think brown- dog turd or other- is appropriate for the year. .perhaps cab 11 or 12, but cab 13 ? I would tend to think that a shade of flat olive/green would be more appropriate for the type...or go exotic with mickey mouse ear camo pattern

Our reenacting/educational group represents the PPCLI. More towards the Italian campaign. That would have fallen into the dog terd brown years. The idea then is that it was a 42 CMP repainted for the Italian campaign. We actually thought about painting it green then do a repaint brown so that some of the frame parts would have been green from underneath.

my understanding is that the new Cdn vehicles shipped to the theatre got sidelined to the British, and the Cdns got mostly the rather tired vehicles used by the 8th Army in N Africa..so possibly they would have been sand coloured prior to painting.
|In looking at some modelling sites- where these issues are also heaviily discussed.. "The vehicles sent from Canada were often one basic colour. CMP trucks were still being sent to Italy during 1943 in ME Light Stone 61 and many were never repainted. When they were, SCC 2 brown or Light Mud would have been usual for the period. You can accurately leave off the disruptive colour " Personally, I might go with the sand (light stone) or light mud...than the turd brown..it would be accurate it seems, looke much nicer, AND make a very nice change as there arent that many Cdn restored vehicles in the sand colour...and you get a chance to educate the public about Cdn actions and contributions in a theatre (N Afr) that most Cdns dont know about....in addition to Italy perhaps some other folks have some thoughts on this?

Ok, here is question for you guys...How does the back window go together/ work? I know there is only sliding metal for the window but how does the whole thing together.
On another note, the auto shop teacher found someone to paint the truck, so the bed, toolbox and rims are being painted as we speak and when those are done, the cab and frame will be painted. The hatch arrived in the mail today (thanks Marc), now we just have to have the wood shop replicate the wooden parts and the metal shop make a new hinge. I believet that this will be the last amount of work being done to the CMP until next school year. Joel |

Does anyone know the approximate weight of our CMP? I have seen conflicting specs. I am investigating a hauling trailer and wonder if my pick up can even handle it.

Hello Everyone
I hope your summer was relaxing and productive. Another school year starts and so another round of students starts work on the CMP. The list of jobs that are now on the go are: 1) Wiring - all the switches are here so the wiring of the electrical system can begin 2) The Speedo cluster has arrived and boy does it look nice - it will be installed 3) The roof hatch is being stalled The fun now is finding or making the pieces we need. The roof hatch has one hinge so we have to see if the metal shop can make a second one. We are also looking for convoy lights and windshield wiper motors. Plus we need to figure out how to wire up the gas tanks or even see if we can. |

Well the work continues once again. The dashboard is being worked on and so is the hatch. The wood frame is done but the students are working on the inner pieces of wood. Now I just nned to figure out how the canvas and/or rubber attaches to the hatch?
The CMP now has tires and a windshield. Though I need to figure out what gasket goes around the windshild frames. The students installed one of the wiper motors but have not tested them yet. Since I worked with students to rebuild them, we need to test them. The one sad note was that we tried to get the CMP into the Christmas Parade in Port but it kept stalling. It would start up fine and idle but when we gave her gas, she would stall. The students are hoping a one way valve in the gas line will fix that. Hope you enjoy the pics ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Idling / stalling...... why and what is a on way valve for.....
Sounds like you have another simple but tricky problem. At least you know you have spark or it would not start/run. Have you installed a vacuum gauge....? if not think of doing so even if only temporary....... reading off the guage will help you out. You may have a leak in the intake manifold.... gauge will show a low reading. Are you sure the vacuum advance at the bottom of the dizzy is working...? To test..... disconnect at the carburator....fit a tight rubber hose on it.... and suck...... with a 3 foot hose you should be able to see the dizzy move slowly....... suck and hold it with your tongue..... if it moves and stays moved your OK.... if it slips back you have a leak or perforated diaphram..... You are sure the timing is A OK..... TDC or 5 degree before...... and that has to be set with the vacuum advance disconnected and the open line to the carb plugged...... How is it idling.... nice and smooth..... no puffing from the exhaust pipe... When out of gear...idling.... if you give it gas slowly will it rev up.....if you press the gas fast does it stall......? Make sure your vacuum line is connected at the base of the carb or directly to the intake manifold. Is the wiper line sealed/plugged at the manifold?? What kind of carb are you using.....pics..? You have suitable fuel filter before the carb..... have you tried running the truck with a one gallon tank gravity feed above the engine..... careful for fire..? Shame you missed out on Santa's parade....... Get back with more info.... Bob

Actually Ford did eventually work this out... in the last of the mods carried out over the years of Cab 13 production as can be see in this pic of the Camp Borden F60L Machinery - note the intents in the frame to accommodate.

If fuel is a problem, go with an electric fuel pump..done this a couple times on CMP trucks as sitting overtime the fuel would run back to the tank.
If pressing the clutch stalls the truck I would suggest maybe something amiss with the clutch setup and or the idle rpm of the engine. |

HI Joel
Unless the clutch linkage is rubbing on or pressing on something relevant to the fuel or the dizzy I can't figrue that one out. Let's get back to basic..... Engine will start engine will idle in neutral engine idles smoothly at 450 to 475 rpm...... will engine accelarate and rev up when you manually open up the gas by moving the carb linkage near the carb...... and settle back down when released. now leaving the truck in neutral will the engine accellarate as above when pressign the gas pedal. Have you checked the vacuum advance to see if the dizzy twists / moves when you manually accelarate the engine.... do you have a reading from a vacuum gauge...for idle..... how steady is the needle. any rubble in the exhaust at idle. Now time to crawl underneath the beast..... have someone press the clutch from above...... is anything rubbing on the clutch linkage Now try again........ live dangerously...... engine running.... in neutral..... have someone depress the clutch..... same.... have someone engage in first gear and slowly release the clutch while looking underneath...... Unless something is binding in the clutch pack.... throwout bearing.... Is the tranny easy to shift in all four gears...... including reverse..... Wait a minute...... could you clutch linkage be activating the brake pedal when you press down on the clutch pedal....... Man I wish you were around the corner so I could drop by..... Check these things out and get back to us... Keith Never seen that mod before.....must admit it makes a lot of sense. Bouncing Bob
