M813A1 CDN Question
Good day
I was hoping that someone here would have some detailed pictures of the Canadian M813A1 with the skid-mounted fuel tanks. I am looking for any pictures of the CF amendments on the truck. This is for a 1/35 model project I'm working on. Thanks in advance.

Don't forget to put the "hoodscoop" on the Canadian 5 ton hoods. Basically it was a sheet metal cover to cover the jake brake modification to the engines.

Jacobs Engine Brake
From the Modification Instruction I have in my collection (C-30-470-000/CF-20), the Jacobs Engine Brake wasn't installed until 1983. The vehicle in my 1981 photograph does not have the signature engine hood assembly.

That was about the year I remember doing them.
Looking at your photo, it is not hard to see why transport Canada eventually decided that those tenders did not meet the standard. As I recall they were single wall tanks, and merely cargo strapping them in place hardly seems overly secure. |

I was hoping you two would be lurking around here. Ed, your article in Army Motors (yes I still call it Army Motors) really inspired me to build a 5 Ton from around RV86. Would the ND tiers still have been used? I know by RV92 (I was with the Strats then) they had a different pattern. also at that time would the spare tire have been moved to the back of the passenger side underneath the cargo box?

M813a1
Glad to hear that my History in Motion article was an inspiration.
Modification Instruction C-30-471-00/CF-002 directed that the spare tire be relocated from the cargo box to the where the tool box was located in 1983. Here is a photograph taken in Valcartier in 1984 showing the change, I did not photograph any of the M813A1s during RV85. This image may also answer your tire question. |

Ed: do you have an image of the tire carrier installation from the C-30-471-00/CF-002 instruction? I would like to see what the carrier assembly looks like, and how the spare was attached to the carrier.
Was it similar to that shown in my photo below?

That looks like the same spare tire bracket as was used on the MLVW, and adapted to the 5 ton. For some reason I don't recall that modification.
As to the non-directional tires, as far as I remember, they were still available, however, on certain 5 tons, we installed the MLVW 1100-20 tires because of the better traction those tires provided on highway surfaces. Wreckers especially come to mind. |

Thanks. The assembly in my photo remains a mystery (...for now).

Thanks everyone for all the great info and pictures. I can't believe I spent two years on these things in Gagetown (Petersville) and I can only find a hand full of pictures. Would anyone have detailed pictures of the cab cargo box . Thanks.
