The rear axle hub looks funny....is it a CDN3 axle? Or is perhaps the whole vehicle a 1970/71?

There appears to be a spare data plate sitting on the passenger seat.

That looks like a '67 gas tank. The '70 is butt-edge welds and more stalky looking, not rounded and rolled edges.

To the seller, are you familiar with the Home Hardware store in Dunham? They have quite the time machine for old surplus "stuff" in their back warehouse. I found a good condition USGI jerry can in there which was half-full of old engine oil, so it in not rusted in the usual places. I also remember seeing old fashioned marquis tent wooden poles. That is going back a ways!

The factory 1970 tank is the same Terry. The welded edge squarish tanks were early 80s replacement tanks contracted in Canada. The necks on them were terrible, and you had to fit the gas cap on them to get them to work.

There are a half dozen differences on a Cdn3 from a Cdn2 that are easy to spot. Things like closed hood hinges on a Cdn3, re-enforced spring hanger area on the frame at the forward mounts of the rear axle, re-enforcing squares welded to the body for the seatbelts, and of course the one piece rear axle shafts with the larger self adjusting brakes. None of the photos really show if this is the case or not, other than what looks like a Cdn3 rear axle flange.

Rob,these are one piece axles from a CDN3.i read your very interesting reply in a post here about cdn2 and cdn3 differences, this one is a cdn2 according to the things you mentionned to check.
Terry, yes i'm familiar with the dunham surplus.not much interesting stuff left unfortunately!
yes Wayne there is another data plate on the seat,it's from my cdn3,i've put them aside to compare and forgot it when i took the pics.

Not unlike my first M38A1, it's a 1970 CDN3 but had a '67 rear axle in it...
I guess the motor pool Veh Techs used what was available.

Swapping the rear axle between years was slightly more complicated than ordering an axle. The U bolts and shock mounting plates also had to be matched to the correct axle since the tube diameters were different. There was a CFTO which advised of the parts needed when the proper axle was not available.

We even still had the odd 50s axle assembly, identifiable by the earlier brake system, floating around on vehicles towards the end.

All this made for very confusing times for the poor guy trying to order parts.
