Brian,

Others would say I´m wasting my time, but thanks. . .

So do I understand correctly all C8AX´s were delivered with the wider 15-cwt fenders (so this example is not an exeption to the rule)?

Thanks,
Hanno

Default That's correct Hanno,

The only narrow guards I have seen are modified wide ones which still have original holes.

I believe there is a reference in Wheels and Tracks, either issues 1/2 or a later issue in the 'What's new' column where Ross Hopkins' C8AX was pictured. Bart related that the preliminary parts list C8AX had the C15A part numbers for the front guards.

Back then Bart thought there were only a small number of survivors in NZ, when in fact they are still numerous, and a few ex Solomons campaign C8AX seem to have ended up in Aussie.

Default Some closer views:

The Radio shack is unfinished, but we managed to give it a repaint and fit a lot of parts for show. It is a replica built to a slightly differnt style to the one featured on the NZ ZC1 site. (The owner of the HUP saw the original it was based on. There is a second replica in the Wanaka Transport Museum)

The Ambulance has 4 stretcher capacity, but is more like a WW1 style than the contemporary Dodge and Austin ambulances.

The GS version is the most numerous, and were often seen in the Solomons campaign without a canopy. The deck has similarities to early model 8cwt CMPs.

It took a while to get them together! They are from Wellington, Hamilton and Gisborne.

Yes , more and more of them are turning up over here ...nearly all of them are found in NSW , indicating a disposal point within that state . Back in the 70's we thought they were rare over here , but not anymore. I guess a few ship loads of them were shipped in ..must have been a bargain deal for the buyer , being sold 'in situ' on the Pacific Islands, made the deal less attractive for many prospective buyers maybe. The NZ Govt. obviously didn't want to be involved in shipping them home and sold the lot 'as is'.

Seems odd that the trucks found here were actually in an active theatre of operations, the Solomons .. but the examples left in NZ didn't see any angry shots fired.

Default Had two

I owned no less than two of these beasties in the late 1980's. both had been found at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales.

One went to Les Bell in Sydney and the other to Mike K here on MLU !

Not sure of the serial numbers anymore but I'm sure they both made it onto the list.

Cheers

Phill

In all the pics of the plates shown in this thread, there is no hyphen between the XH and 8448, but there is a hyphen between the 8448 and the 3 digit serial.
And mfgd? Manufacturinged?

Default Stampings

Just to go back...XH = GM Overseas Operations code for New Zealand. It related to the two plants, and then around 1955 it changed to 'NZ' for some reason!

It appears as though XH8448, or the equivalent in South Africa...XG844x, indicates a model number. GM of Canada tended to differentiate models by destination, with 'X1' to 'X9' used as a suffix. In this case the stamper has added '-' then the sequential number starting with '001' which is interesting, since it could have been '1', and it looks rather neat. However whomever did the stamping varied the date format, between 'US' and 'British' styles.

Also noteworthy is that the 1943ish-on GM of Canada plate change (there was evidently a running-change, e.g. with the C60S 1942-3 Models) brought in a new plate with 'DATE OF M[ANU]F[ACTURIN]G' instead of 'MANUFACTURED' or 'ASSEMBLED'. This plate design was not used post-war, and was evidently restricted to CMPs unless anyone knows of a 1943-44 MCP with one?

Hi there

I got two data plates with my completely dismantled C8AX. It is now restored as a wireless truck (NZ body) as this was what the chassis was from.

Numbers are; XH 8448-102 engine FR 3838726 and XH 8448-068 FR3852738.

If anyone out in MLP land can tell me what the New Zealand service number was for these plates I'll be forever indebted.

More info for the list anyways.

Cool C8ax

A bit further info on the C8AX wide front guards is that they are exactly the same size, and same position boltholes as the ones off my F30,i wonder if they were ordered with wide guards for wide sized wheels.I am restoring a C8AX cab at the moment for a fellow club member.

Oops, too many thumbs! It's should be -594, which is already on the list.

Default Coonamble C8AX

Went out to Coonamble NSW to look for a spare part today. The old chap had a C8AX that was done up quite nice. I spotted the number and was surprised how low it was - 016. Put me onto a wreck at Baradine that is C8AX too.

Engine # FR3552612
Number - 016
Manufacture 5 - 5 - 43
Door Number 23069

Default Number and build date

It doesn't make sense. The earliest numbers are March. The number range for May production ranges (in the above list) from number377 to 657.
What happening here?

Lynn- Sorry!!!

You are right, the manufacture month is March not May. I wrote it on paper as the only photo I could take was with my mobile phone, hence the poor quality. Just read you post and ducked out to the car to check the note pad.

I am looking at a C8AX Baradine tomorrow and will take the camera this time, but this one is a proper wreck. All I’m after is a front brake cylinder from it but will still record its details for this list.

I'm not looking for apologies, just trying to keep the record straight for the future. Good on you for doing the work, collecting the info. By the way your truck looks great! Cheers.

Default Clear up C8AX Number 016

Went out last week and re checked the numbers on the C8AX at Coonamble and the plate was as below-

Chassis Mod C15441
Chassis Serial Number XH8448 - 016
Engine No FR3552612
Order Number 2394
Date of Manufacture 5 - 3 - 43
Door Number NZ23069

I printed off the C8AX list for Athol and he was quite surprised that he had the lowest know number at 016.

The truck I said a few posts back I was going to look at near Baradine wasn't another C8AX so no new info there.
