Default Fire extinguisher in M38s

Did we ever determine the "proper" place to mount the 5 lb Ansul extinguisher in an M38AlCDN3?

I've used this Forum's search function but haven't come across any "final" answer.

There is a CFTO out on this but no-one seems to have a copy.

I've heard of various positions for the extinguisher, i.e. vertically on the dash, somewhere on the floor on the passenger side, horizontally behind the driver's seat, horizontally on the left rear sponson.

Some of the above positions don't lend themselves to the CDN3, whereas some of the positions might be suitable for other M38 production configurations.

Any one?

Mine was vertically mounted, behind the driver's seat, on the wheel well.

Clive:

You mean it was mounted vertically on that bracket that one can see sticking up?

Perhaps that was some sort of mod applicable only to such as your CDN2?

BTW...I have a very thick manual for the Iltis...first, second, third line maintenance. Interested?

Jon Skagfeld -

Here is a partial scan of an Equipment Data Sheet for the M-38A1. It dates from 1959 and has what I believe to be a 5lb fire extinguisher between the front seats. Of course the cylinder could be for the NOS system. I'll look to see if the mount location shows up in any other period pics. All the other scans of M-38's/M-38A1's don't clearly show interior views that well however. Cheers,

Craig

Craig:

Thanks for the pic, however with the WS No 19, that veh wouldn't have been a CDN3.

It's interesting to see (and also puzzling) that the extinguisher is mounted down by the hand brake. I've tried that...no go...extinguisher and hand brake impinge on each other and impede each others operation in a CDN3.

Also interesting in your pic is that the passenger seat appears to be removed, thus perhaps allowing more room for the extinguisher to be mounted in a more favourable position.

...and the search goes on!

My 'beast' is interesting in that it came from LETE and has EVERY hole for EVERY modification - radios, weapons, GPMG Recce mount, M72 LAW mount, etc.., based on this I cannot point at my vehicle as being typical of a CDNx.
Am interested in the manual insofar as I can use info for my Iltis page.
Cheers,
Clive
PS. Haven't forgotten the m/c book. These are going out this week now that I have some time.

Dean:

Yes, but that would have been mounted on the floor in a CDN2, probably on passenger side. The CDN3 has an inspection plate in that location so the extinguisher can't go there.

If you're attending the Hammond barn in June, I can bring the Iltis manual with me.

Looking forward to the m/c book.

Default fire extinguisher location

Re: Fire extinguisher mount location

Hello

I have a copy of the relocation of fire extinguisher and sub machine gun brackets for CDN 2 and 3, EME Modification sheet.

It has the SMG mount being removed from the dash (From the left side of the chicken bar) to the floor between the seats (to the right of the hand brake) and the fire extinguisher mount being moved to the dash.

Unfortunately my copy had the date cut off.

The CDN 2 originally had the fire extinguisher on the floor between the seats.

The CDN1 had a brass fire extinguisher depicted in one of the earlier photos, then replaced with the light blue ones later on.

Clive's M38A1 has a decontamination bracket mounted on the left rear fender.

Thanks
Eric

Damm! You're right. Four of the five voices in my mind are telling me to go and kick myself in the butt.
