External oil filter and winter toolkit
Hi all,
I've tried to figure out a couple of things but without success, so I come with a couple of questions about the external oil filter on the 15/60 CWT 12 & 13 cab:

Ford or Chevy
Hi Ciao
On the Chevy Pattern 12 the oil filter is located horizontally in the left frame rail and is attached by combination of flex rubber line and steel pipe. The same location and system was used on the early Chevy Pattern 13s http://www.canadianmilitarypattern.c...STORATION.html see bottom picture, you can see the oil filter at the lower left of the picture showing the open gear box. Location was later changed on the Pattern 13s to a larger filter mounted on a bracket vertically and the rear of the intake and exhaust manifold. As to the artic kit really need to know Ford or Chevy. I have the cold weather modifications manual for the late Chevy Pattern 13s. Which I can scan and post. Cheers Phil

Thanks a lot Phil, if you could scan the interesting part of the manual (I don't know if there's something like an overall drawing of the parts) I would be grateful. If you want to make hi-res scans that cannot be hosted on this very forum I can store them on one of my sites to make them available to the MLU community.
For the rest, quite likely I didn't pose the question properly. What I assume is an external oil filter is the cylinder attached to the lower left side of the bonnet as shown in the attached pic. Thanks once more Ciao Fabio

No that is a coolent recover tank.
Hi
I'll scan and post the entire winter kit manual and post it on my site I've got plenty of space. The tank shown on the bonnet is a coolant recovery tank which was mounted on the left front of the bonnet on Pattern 12 and Early Pattern 13 Chevys. Meant to recover the water that is forced out of the radiator and engine as the engine heats up, designed so that the water is drawn back into the radiator when the engine cools. Very important that the cap and all the connections are leak free so that this will work correctly. This tank was later relocated under the passenger foot well, the bonnet location was subject to a lot of damage which caused leaks. I'll try and find better pictures of the oil filter locations.

Oil filter locations....
Inside the frame.....under the passenger side....must have been a bitch without getting oil up your sleeve....
No wonder they changed to the engine vertical location..... Cheers

Oil Filter Change of Location

You are correct the filter horizontal on the frame has got to be one of the nastiest locations you could figure out just about as bad as many modern cars. You get to burn yourself on the exhaust pipe and dumb hot oil down your sleeve. But the change over to the bigger filter mounted high in the engine compartment I think had as much to do with better filtering and a filter that condensation could actually be drained out of. There is quite a lot of information about the filter relocation in the Service Bulletins from the fact that they had a kit for retrofitting the earlier design kind of tells you that original horizontal locations was not doing the job.
